Cookie Monsters

and the elusive cookie jar

Ahh, the mysterious cookie jar. That beautiful, magical creature that decorates our kitchen and fills our tummies with glee.

Or not.

I’ve been pondering cookie jars lately—ever since I found this amazing jar (five points if you can name what it is, fellow nerds!). And I’ve decided this: cookie jars are one of those things people either “do” or they just don’t think about. My sister-in-law, for example,... READ MORE

What Do You Put In These Things?

Culinary Wednesday

After putting on a very satisfactory July 4th barbecue, with leftovers to last much of the week, I’m really not feeling the need to try new recipes.

But here is something simple that might help some of us moms this summer ...

On my next trip to the dollar store, I’m going to pick up some popsicle molds and start experimenting. Back when all seven kids were at home, these molds were essential equipment. ... READ MORE

It's a Muffin Kind of Morning

Homemade Made Easy

I love muffins! So easy! So homemade! So flexible! So very yummy!

Here’s what I’m hoping to convince a kid or two to help me bake up this morning:

Oatmeal Muffins

1 cup milk
1 cup quick cooking oats
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
(We might even put some blueberries in there)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease muffin... READ MORE

Homemade Hot Cocoa

When the Swiss Miss won't do

All this cold weather has me thinking about two of my favorite things: being warm and chocolate.

Enter this homemade hot cocoa recipe I came across. It looks delicious. Don’t you think homemade cocoa blows the store bought stuff out of the (icy cold) water?

From the Hershey’s Website:
Hot Cocoa

Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup HERSHEY’S Cocoa
Dash salt
1/3 cup hot water
4 cups (1 qt.) milk
3/4... READ MORE

Crafting Can Be Fun!

Right?

Tonight I’m meeting with some neighbor ladies to work on crafts for an upcoming Christmas festival. Is this your cup of tea? It’s not mine!

I go to these crafting gatherings with low expectations (for myself). They aren’t my favorite, but that doesn’t mean it has to be painful. In fact, over the last few years, I have learned that I should have two goals at a gathering where arts and crafts is the... READ MORE

I Scream!

We all scream for ice cream

Tonight we made homemade ice cream. It was good!

We have the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Dessert Book and today I realized I had all the ingredients to make Heath Bar Crunch Ice Cream!

If you love Dairy Queen Heath Blizzards (my favorite) try this recipe sometime. It was almost like eating a Blizzard. Good times indeed.

Breakfast on the Go

from your very own kitchen!

I’d love it if I could eat a good breakfast every morning. Some days when the kids cooperate, I do manage to sit down for a fried egg or a bowl of cereal. But many days it’s not possible, and I end up scarfing down a piece of toast while directing potty trips and putting the day’s first load of laundry in the washer.

This is why I love the idea of a granola bar. It’s like a breakfast of oatmeal that... READ MORE

Dough!

You, too, can make your own

After hearing from all the readers who both have pizza on a regular basis AND make their own (as opposed to calling their Papa John, as we did on Friday) I am now convinced that making my own pizza on a weekly basis will be fun, affordable and delicious.

In the comments section, there were a few suggestions for good homemade dough. (Here is one Arwen posted a while back.) Today I also came across a recipe from Martha Stewart that looked tasty as well.

I won’t lie—dealing with yeast intimidates me a little. But I’m going to give it a shot and pray that a new family tradition is about to arise!

Make Your Own Gnocchi

Little dumplings of deliciousness

Danielle’s recipe for mashed potato soup looks wonderful, and I’ve bookmarked it to try the next time we need a warm, comforting winter meal. (Soon.) Cheap, easy, and delicious is a trifecta that will draw me to a recipe every time!

But sometimes I like a challenge. Although I usually want meals to be easy to prepare, it can be fun to make slightly more time-consuming dishes, if the work-investment... READ MORE

Made by Mom

What do you make for your family?

Since the start of the new year, I have been enjoying following the Homemade 365 blog.

Jennifer, the blog author, has committed to making and posting about something “homemade” for every day of the year.

So far her entries have been varied—orange soda, bird food, porridge, laundry detergent, a calendar, salad dressing, a rash treatment, and yogurt among others.

I have yet to try any of the projects... READ MORE
