Tempted Am I

Williams-Sonoma goes over to the dark side

I tried not to look at the latest Williams-Sonoma catalog.

But I sensed a disturbance in the force and gave in.

I know this ought to be resisted: else where will the product tie-ins end?

And yet…I have little wookies boys who would be absolutely delighted if these showed up at a birthday party.

I hate it when the Dark Side is cute.

Getting It Done

What's the division of labor in your household?

I don’t want to wear out the topic of housecleaning, but Danielle’s post about her Holy Week cleaning schedule (along with the fact that my husband is currently sweeping our kitchen floor) has me thinking about division of labor in your household.

Danielle’s list looks dauntingly ambitious to me, but she’s got an advantage: all those helpers. I have a one-year-old, who makes me feel lucky if he doesn’t... READ MORE

She Quit Her Job to Get a Life

Nobody can really 'have it all'
Gaby Hinsliff with Freddie

In a thought-provoking article, Gaby Hinsliff, former political editor of the Observer in the UK, recently admitted something astonishing:

The successful career woman and mother of one small son only appeared to have it all, she explained. Her life was out of balance. And she planned to fix it the only way she knew how—by quitting her job to stay home with her son.

In the sleepless blur of the last... READ MORE

Home-Preserved Goods

Share your canning wisdom

We visited my brother-in-law’s family in Idaho a few years ago, and my husband and I were enchanted by the rows and rows of home-canned fruits and vegetables in our hostess’s pantry.  We immediately agreed that this was something we wanted for ourselves.  Home-canned produce!  How beautiful!  How delicious!  How handy for the long Michigan winters!

Since then, every spring we’ve talked about how this... READ MORE

Refriganization

I'm not so good at it

We have three identical, opened bottles of barbeque sauce in our refrigerator.

This is not necessarily wasteful.  Barbeque sauce has a long shelf life and it will all get used eventually.  But it is a less-than-optimal use of space in our crowded refrigerator.

I discovered the sauce tonight when I was putting away the groceries from a large trip to the store.  In order to make room for them, I had... READ MORE

Mary of My Home

The Blessed Mother as the ultimate homemaker, of my home and of my soul

I imagine my soul as a house that Mary makes into a home for her Son.  It’s drafty and dirty and in need of a fresh coat of paint.  Sometimes there’s a recurring sin that gnaws away like termites, slow and steady, almost invisible.  Sometimes there’s a dilemma that requires a huge investment of money and lots of time to repair.  Sometimes there’s a strange smell that means something died under the...
