Lunch with the Girls

A fun treat...

One day last week, I was headed out the door to meet two girlfriends for lunch. My wonderful husband, who was working from home that day, stopped me and reminded me of a meeting he needed to attend—the unanticipated issue: our heater was dead and we had workers in our home installing a new one (we’ll discuss my freezing, disgruntled feelings about that situation in a future post). One of us needed... READ MORE

Harveen's Brand of Hospitality

What "welcome" feels like!

This weekend, I experienced the power of faith and of hospitality while hanging out with a very cool group of Catholic ladies at the Winona Diocesan Council of Catholic Women’s annual conference. As the “featured” speaker, supposedly I was there to convey information and inspiration to the members who were assembling from ten districts across the southern portion of the state of Minnesota.

But the... READ MORE

Thanksgiving Hostess Gifts

What do you take when you're invited?

This week our family will celebrate a “different” Thanksgiving.  I am in Cambridge for the week with Eric, enjoying time with him and working on my writing project.  Greg and Adam are back at home, at work and school.

This is the first time the four of us will be separated for Thanksgiving.  We’re not one of those families who always does the same thing every year - we’ve given thanks in a variety... READ MORE

No-Stress Guide to Hosting Thanksgiving

a work schedule keeps you on track and on time

(I wrote this post last year, but since I have gotten a couple of panicked emails already this year, I figure it’s time to re-run it ...)

Are you hosting a Thanksgiving gathering at your house this year? If so, I am here to tell you this:

Breathe. Relax. You can do this. It’s going to be just lovely.

We’ll be hosting Dan’s dad at our house this year. I am sad that my sister and her wonderfully big... READ MORE

Signs and Blessings

One of the happiest consequences of our relaxed summer schedule is that we’ve had more time for visiting friends and family.

We’ve seen cousins in Connecticut, we’ve met up with friends at conferences, and the boys had a week of day camp with friends. Over the holiday weekend, we were blessed with the company of my sister, her husband, and (the Bean kids’ favorite part):

COUSINS!!!

It’s easy to take... READ MORE

We discuss our favorite saintly friends and cherish the Autumn weather

On this week’s podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Danielle and I discuss some of our “go to” patron saints, including St. Therese and St. Anne.

Who are some of the saints with whom you have a special intercessory relationship?  Does St Anthony find your keys? Does St Jude make the car start when it’s been stalling? Do you have a saint you call on during pregnancy and labor... READ MORE

Are You Neighborly?

Do you hang out with or hide from your neighbors?

We have lived in our current house for almost nine years, having moved in when Adam was in Kindergarten.  Living on a cul de sac, we have experienced very few comings and goings during that time so we’re mostly surrounded by the same folks who lived on our street when we moved in.

I have to admit, we’re not a very neighborly bunch.  Shortly after we moved in, the neighbors on one side of us came over... READ MORE

New Year’s Eve…FAMILY STYLE

As a kid, I always thought that my parents let us stay up until midnight to celebrate the New Year.

But then came the year that my all-knowing older sister spilled the beans. “It’s not really midnight,” she told me. “Dad just changes the clock.”

Could it be true? It was. And it still is.

Each year, aunts and uncles, cousins and grandchildren in my family gather for a New Year’s Eve celebration.... READ MORE
