New Year’s Eve…FAMILY STYLE

As a kid, I always thought that my parents let us stay up until midnight to celebrate the New Year.

But then came the year that my all-knowing older sister spilled the beans. “It’s not really midnight,” she told me. “Dad just changes the clock.”

Could it be true? It was. And it still is.

Each year, aunts and uncles, cousins and grandchildren in my family gather for a New Year’s Eve celebration.... READ MORE

Company’s Coming!

How do you greet guests in your home?

My mom is arriving today for an extended visit.  She will be with us until June 6th to celebrate Adam’s 8th grade graduation, visit with my brother and his family, and just generally be a source of love and support in my home.

I hate the fact that she lives so far away in Mississippi, but love that these long visits give her plenty of time with my boys, as well as time for she and I to simply “hang... READ MORE

Nana on the Scene

Having my mom in my home makes everything run much more smoothly!

Lucky me!  My mom arrived for an extended visit on Wednesday and my home is already looking and running more smoothly, plus I’m a much happier camper.

Let me preface this by saying the my parents now live in Gulfport, Mississippi, so these visits feel very few and far between.  But the good news is that when my mom comes, she stays for a few weeks so it’s a nice, long time together.  Somehow, it always... READ MORE

Happily Hospitable?

Fostering a culture of hospitality in our homes

Tonight, we will be hosting a backyard barbecue for my mother in law, sister and brother in law and five year old nephew Jake.  Jake and his mom and dad are visiting from Camarillo, and he loves to come over to our house and play with his big boy cousins.

Since the only extended family we have living in Fresno is my mother-in-law, these opportunities for family gatherings are much too rare.  I would... READ MORE

Open House

Worried about what your teens are up to? Make your house the "hang-out" house!

Refrigerator raids, loud mu sic, and a lot of horsing around may not sound like fun to you, but to your kids and their friends it’s heaven on earth. Yes, kids — especially teens — can be loud, expensive, and at times, can rattle your nerves, but the time, money, and energy you spend on them now is a wise investment, paying lasting dividends.

Studies and statistics show that teens without a healthy... READ MORE

Loving without Labor

Sometimes Christ calls us to rest.

On Monday we had some friends over for dinner, newlyweds who will soon be moving across the country.  When my husband invited them, he announced that we’d get take-out, since I’m constantly nauseated these days due to my first-trimester status.

Under normal circumstances I enjoy cooking for guests.  Preparing food is fun for me and I relish my friends’ happy reactions to the food I’ve made.  But during... READ MORE

The Heat is On!

A Summertime Guide to Great Grilling - Family-friendly recipes and favorite go-alongs.

By Elizabeth Foss

It’s summertime and the living is easy — at least theoretically.

Most summer weekends find my family on a soccer field, and as surely as the referee is going to blow the final whistle, we are going to invite someone from the sidelines to come for dinner. The day will be hot, the sun will fade, and we will share good food with good friends. The children will play soccer in the back... READ MORE
