Peachy Keen

So many peaches!

Help! I have two bushels of peaches on my kitchen counter. The delicious fruit is a gift from my husband’s clients.

Today we ate lots of peaches, and then I made peach cobbler. My oldest son has made peach smoothies, and I’m hoping I can find some kind of peach adult beverage that will hit the spot. I also want to try making a peach milkshake, and then slice a bunch of peaches to freeze for later.

That still leaves at least another bushel! Any other ideas? What are your favorite peach recipes?

Great Gift Idea

easy, clever -- and doable!

Tomorrow is our last day of school. Hooray!

I was researching ideas for teacher gifts and came across a very cool idea over at Design Mom—personalized hand soap. I used my picture here (they have a clearer image over there) but I wanted to offer proof that this “craft” is so simple, I was able to pull it off myself.

The project involves printing out “labels” on transparencies, then rolling each one... READ MORE

Strawberry Delight

What shall we make?

There are strawberries-a-plenty around our home right now. While we haven’t managed to get to the U-Pick fields, I drove out to the country today and bought a few gallons of just picked, delicious goodness to enjoy before they go out of season.

The boys and I went through one gallon today, just feasting on the simplicity of this perfect fruit. These strawberries are just sweet enough and just ripe... READ MORE

Unimportant Division

Is there such a thing?

“In nothing is the power of the Dark Lord more clearly shown than in the estrangement that divides all those who still oppose him.”

So says Haldir the elf about the feud between elves and dwarves.

Every time I read The Lord of the Rings, I notice this quotation. How could I fail to do so? I grew up in a home with a Catholic father and a Protestant mother, so disunity among Christians has always been... READ MORE

Stations of the Cross for Kids

Make the Lenten devotion child-friendly

The Stations of the Cross are a lovely devotion, and they’re especially appropriate on Fridays in Lent. Many parishes celebrate them on Friday evenings during the season of penance, but it can be difficult to attend with children. Repeatedly standing and kneeling while corralling children and keeping them from disturbing others is enough of a challenge. Trying also to concentrate on the prayers becomes... READ MORE

Last Minute Lenten Ideas

From My Facebook Peeps, With Love

In addition to the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge, we have some other Lenten aids in the works for Faith & Family readers this year. Look for an announcement about those here later today.

In the meantime, though, for the benefit of those last-minute ladies among us (You know who you are!) I thought I would share some of the ideas I got from friends on Facebook last week when I posted the simple request:... READ MORE

Kids and Thank-Yous

How do you handle it?

Generous relatives and friends sent us Christmas gifts, and so yesterday I wrote a big pile of thank-you notes.

For my own gifts I’m a fan of the classic: lots of raving about the gift and the generosity of the giver, written longhand on pretty stationery.

So far, I’ve written the same kind of notes on behalf of our children for the presents they’ve received. As Camilla gets older I keep thinking... READ MORE

What Did You Give? What Did You Get?

Tell us about this year's winning gifts!

After spending so much time and energy thinking about, shopping for, and wrapping Christmas gifts over the past few weeks, I thought it might be fun to do a bit of a gift assessment today.

Did you give anything that was especially fun or well-received this year?

Did anyone give you anything especially touching or thrilling?

I can give us a start ...

The most fun and unexpected present Dan gave me... READ MORE

Know Your Spouse…

...and have a love-language-enhanced Advent and Christmas!

Over the past few days I’ve been clicking like crazy doing Christmas shopping.

Because gift-giving is one of the love languages, the process of buying gifts for my loved ones has me thinking about the languages.

Are you familiar with the concept of the love languages? I read about it in The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. I certainly don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all path to marital bliss,... READ MORE
