Seeking a Miracle

Family seeks intercession of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

I teared up reading this one, and resolved to pray as well.

Two-year-old Joseph Whalin, the youngest of seven in a Catholic family, has recently been diagnosed with advanced cancer. From his bed, the toddler has had visions of angels and a visions of what his family believes to be Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

So they are praying for her intercession for a miracle for their little boy.

Read the whole story here, and join in the prayers if you find yourself so moved.

Blessed Health

On the complexity of creation

Two years ago right now, newborn Blaise was in the hospital with RSV and I was struggling, big-time.

Having a sick child is never fun. Having an eight-pound infant hospitalized for a week and a half while you’re dealing with postpartum hormones is awful. It was supposed to be our babymoon, but I spent ten nights of it catching snatches of sleep in between comforting a newborn who couldn’t understand... READ MORE

Childhood Memories on Film

Remembering Mom

We gave a special gift to my dad this Christmas.

After years of talking about it and trying to find a projector that could handle the project, we had all of our old 8mm movies transferred to DVD format.

Sitting with my own family, watching the voiceless images of my childhood — set to music of the time by my sister and her husband — it was impossible not to be nostalgic. As I narrated the “who’s... READ MORE

Much Ado About the Flu

How are you planning to avoid illness this year?

Last year, in the midst of the swine flu frenzy we talked about flu shots and faith.

This year, though there seems to be less of a general panic about getting everyone vaccinated against this year’s flu virus, the shots are still on my mind. I was happy to get myself and all of the kids vaccinated at a local drug store last week.

According to Flu.gov, this year’s flu vaccine “protects against an... READ MORE

Strep-tastic

Confessions of a Whiny Mom

“I feel like I’ve been whining for two days straight,” I whined to my husband last night as we went to bed.

“You have,” he responded matter-of-factly.

I do have an excuse. I’m sick. Or to give you a better idea of what I’ve been like to live with lately, I should probably say, “I’m siiiiiiiiick ...”

I don’t get sick often. I am sure my family is grateful for this.

This particular illness comes with... READ MORE

Putting Them First

Finding a good kind of unbalance

Sometimes I just have to trust that God knows better than I do.

After I posted yesterday about what a busy and fun week we have going on, I was awakened at 3am today by a little guy whose body felt suspiciously warm to me. I didn’t bother to take his temperature in the dark, but in the morning it was registering 103°. Not freakishly high, but enough to scare me, especially since Camilla very rarely... READ MORE

Tick Talk

Eeeeeewwwww ...

The ticks are back.

I’ve picked a few off of the kids so far this season, and already I feel myself itching all over.

I have always considered ticks a nuisance. A pretty gross one at that. Living so close to the woods like we do, we see quite a number of them each year. Really, though, I always thought of them as just a nuisance.

But this past January, my 6-year-old Gabrielle was diagnosed with Lyme disease.... READ MORE

St. Francis Prayer for Sickies

(the stomach virus version)

All that talk about stomach viruses yesterday made me remember this prayer I wrote while in the throes of a stomach bug a few years back.

I thought I’d share it with you all here:

St. Francis Prayer (stomach virus version)

Lord,
Make me an instrument of Your healing love;
Where there is vomit let me bring Lysol;
Where there are boogers, Kleenex;
Where there is fever, Tylenol;
Where there is boredom,... READ MORE

5 Ways to Survive a Stomach Virus

'Tis the season!

I got a Facebook message from a mom of 5 the other day:

“How many of your kids have ever hand vomiting at the same time? I’ve got 3/5, a fourth with a bucket. The 5 month old is the only one not puking. Do you have any tips besides double-wrapping the beds if possible?”

The answer to the first question is something like six kids at once, I think. And when I say “at once” I mean at once. As in, all... READ MORE
