The Quality Of Mercy

a mom's intercession for her son's killers

A neighbor passed along a prayer request from a college classmate.

That’s not so unusual, except that this request is from a mom on behalf of the gang members who killed her son while on a cocaine bender.

Read this: I think you’ll be moved.

On May 14th three years ago, this young woman endured a mom’s nightmare:

I was walking to the store pulling my two and a half year old son in a wagon, carrying... READ MORE

Seeking a Miracle

Family seeks intercession of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

I teared up reading this one, and resolved to pray as well.

Two-year-old Joseph Whalin, the youngest of seven in a Catholic family, has recently been diagnosed with advanced cancer. From his bed, the toddler has had visions of angels and a visions of what his family believes to be Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

So they are praying for her intercession for a miracle for their little boy.

Read the whole story here, and join in the prayers if you find yourself so moved.

Sharing Prayer

Let's do it!

Sometimes when my tiny twin boys are kicking me, I actually tear up thinking about how many people are praying for them.

To me, prayers are probably the biggest perk of being a blogger. My babies don’t deserve prayer more than any other babies, but they get it because so many kind, generous people know about their existence and wish the best for them. What a blessing that is!

Today, I’d like to share... READ MORE

When Extra Coffee Won't Suffice

St. Joseph of Cupertino, pray for them!

Anyone know a college student who is right about now pulling all-nighters, drinking crazy amounts of espresso, and is on a first-name basis with the pizza delivery guy?

Ah, exam prep time. Seems like just yesterday. Twitch. Shudder. I still get that feeling of panic in my gut when I think about it.

There are countless reasons why I wish I lived my faith more when I was in college myself. But being... READ MORE

Prayers For Pardon

Asia Bibi & Said Musa need our prayers

Christians living in majority Muslim countries always need our prayer, but here are a brother and sister who need intercession urgently.

Asia Bibi is a Christian and mother of five sentenced to death in Pakistan for blasphemy.

Asia News has the best ongoing coverage of the case. Essentially she defended her faith when pressed by several women in her village to convert to Islam—and they hauled her... READ MORE

A Good Habit

How does your family pray for the dead?

On the last day of a theology class I took in college, the professor walked into the room, looked at us seriously, and picked up a piece of chalk. He said, “If you remember only one thing from this course, I want it to be this.”

And then he wrote across the board in big capital letters: “PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF THE DEAD.”

The class, incidentally, was Theology of John Paul II, so this point wasn’t even... READ MORE

Choosing Favorites

Pope says pick a saint to emulate

In his general audience yesterday, Pope Benedict encouraged Catholics to have a devotion to a specific saint, asking that saint for intercession but also working to imitate his or her holy life.

According to Zenit, the Holy Father said that it is important “to have ‘travel companions’ on the journey of our Christian life: I am thinking of a spiritual director, a confessor, persons with whom we can... READ MORE

Blessed Travels

Has a saint come through for you in a pinch?

Ever had one of those times when a saint really came through for you? This weekend, I did.

My baby and I travelled by plane to see friends in the DC area. It’s a short flight, about an hour from take-off to landing, but I’ve found that when you have a one-year-old on your lap, any length flight feels long!

I’m not an anxious person generally, but as my husband drove us to the airport on Thursday morning... READ MORE

Praying for the Ill

and being grateful for health on the feast of St. Blaise

Today is the feast day of our little guy’s patron, St. Blaise.

The feast is especially meaningful for me this year. All day I’ve been remembering last year’s feast day, on which our own newborn Blaise was halfway through his ten-day hospital stay with RSV.

In retrospect, I smile at the coincidence. We had planned to name our son Blaise months before he was born, partly because he was due February... READ MORE

Charms of Dieting

Sr. Mary Martha comes through

Sr. Mary Martha’s Etsy shop sells a charm bracelet for dieters.

Of course, you needn’t wear the charms to ask for saintly intercession. I just thought her explanation would delight and amuse.

And maybe help!
