Blessed by Modern Media

I followed with interest the discussion on Danielle’s recent post about the uses of online social networking tools.
My own general take on the topic is in the comments section there (comment #12). I feel that modern media give us both an opportunity and a responsibility to use them - within our own vocations, of course - as best we can to spread the light of Christ.
But I’ve recently had an opportunity... READ MORE
Too Much Time Online?

Do you think you might be wasting too much time online?
Here’s a neat way to control yourself.
You set the program to warn you if you visit a particular site more frequently than the span of time you specify—if you visit Facebook more than once every 12 hours, for example.
If you try it, let me know what you think. No fair setting it for Faith and Family Live! though. You need us. And we need you.
Why Twitter?

I’ve gone and done something I thought I never would do. I began Twittering.
I’m not alone over there, either. My fellow Faith & Family Live! bloggers Arwen, Rachel, and Lisa are active Twitterers as well.
I think it’s no small coincidence that the same week I took on Facebooking and Twittering full force I should read Melinda Selmys’ thought-provoking article about the shortcomings of online social... READ MORE
21st Century Friendships

It was a good thing that Camilla’s cousin came over to play today. Otherwise she and I would have been feeling bereft, because our friend was visiting last week and now she has gone home.
Technically Lauren was my friend first, but I think of her as “our” friend because she and Bryan have an excellent casual rapport and Camilla adores her. We also get along very well with her husband, and all of... READ MORE

I was blogging long before Danielle Bean invited me to join her and the other bloggers at this magazine’s FaithandFamilyLIVE.com site.
Four years ago, I sat down at my computer and started a blog. At the time, I had four boys — ages 2, 4, 6, and 8 — and was feeling a bit weary. My point, I decided, would be to take these stories that would otherwise make me cry — like the time they threw underwear... READ MORE
Blast from the Past

In honor of their tenth birthday, Google is offering a peek at what the search engine was like back in 2001.
The World Wide Web and the world have both changed a lot since 2001 ... If you searched on “Michael Phelps” in 2001 for instance, you were probably looking for the scientist, not the swimmer, “ipod” didn’t refer to a music player, and “youtube” didn’t refer to much of anything.

Benedict XVI celebrated mass today to mark the 50th anniversary of his predecessor Pius XII’s memory.
The homily was beautiful: a noble tribute to possibly the world’s most maligned man save Christ himself.
I always think Pope Pius should be the patron saint of the internet, because his story epitomizes the power of slander.
The picture is a contemporaneous postcard from the Holy Year Pius called... READ MORE
All a-Twitter

When I first started blogging a little over four years ago, few people even knew what a blog was.
These days, few people don’t know what a blog is. Big-name bloggers are interviewed as experts on national news networks and everyday moms exchange URLs at the playground.
For those who don’t read or write blogs, there’s Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, and good ole Google.
Online social networking and communication... READ MORE
