Jane Austen's Men

Isabel Bishop, Scene for Pride & Prejudice

Here’s a fun piece from a fellow who says Jane Austen turned him from a callow youth into a real man.

A graduate student at the time, I was as arrogant as they come and didn’t think there was much anyone could teach me about life—especially not Jane Austen, the godmother of chick-lit.

He was surprised to learn humility from her.

Humiliation, I realized, was exactly what I needed, too. Our egos, Austen... READ MORE

Vote For Jane!

The Royal Mint wants to know who should be the next “Great Briton” in its special series of coins.

Jane Austen fans, unite! We must defeat John Lennon.

(Though if you go for Sir Walter Raleigh instead, I’ll still respect you.)

Gendercide. A blockbuster piece from the Economist on the worldwide shortage of girls. It’s not just China and India!

Bearing Witness. Three audio downloads... READ MORE

Are you a Jane Austen fan?

I was in high school when I first saw the film You’ve Got Mail, and I remember being bewildered by the main character’s professed yearly rereading of Pride and Prejudice. I’d slogged through it because I had an idea that every well-read person should be familiar with Austen, but my fifteen-year-old self had not been impressed. I... READ MORE

Liked It Emm-ensely

what did you think of the new Emma?

Did you watch the new BBC production of Emma on PBS the past two weeks?

It irritated me at first. The slightly more contemporary dialogue and manners put me off.

Here’s a famous scene which I think is just beautifully done, however. It takes place just after Emma has thanked Mr. Knightley for his gallantry in rescuing her friend Harriet from an embarrassing snub by dancing with her.

Moments like... READ MORE

Jane Addiction?

Isabel Bishop (1902–1988), Scene for Pride & Prejudice

Any Jane Austen fanatics out there?

The Morgan Library, which boasts the largest collection of Austen manuscripts and letters in the world, is promoting its new exhibition on her from November to March.

You can read the press release here. Looks worthwhile.

This month my book club is reading Northanger Abbey, with a confirmed Austenphile scheduled to lead the discussion.

I was amused during our last... READ MORE
