I was in high school when I first saw the film You’ve Got Mail, and I remember being bewildered by the main character’s professed yearly rereading of Pride and Prejudice. Did you watch the new BBC production of Emma on PBS the past two weeks?
It irritated me at first. The slightly more contemporary dialogue and manners put me off.
Here’s a famous scene which I think is just beautifully done, however. It takes place just after Emma has thanked Mr. Knightley for his gallantry in rescuing her friend Harriet from an embarrassing snub by dancing with her.

The Morgan Library, which boasts the largest collection of Austen manuscripts and letters in the world, is promoting its new exhibition on her from November to March.
