Bowling Lessons

Babies are easily amused, which is useful. At Mass last week, I amused Blaise for half an hour with a tube of lip balm and an errant sock I found in the diaper bag. Put the tube in the sock, then dump it out… he was mesmerized.
The downside to this is that while it can be fun to take babies on outings, it often feels a bit pointless. Yes, we could pack up the baby and spend the day doing something... READ MORE
New Arrival

I was quite excited when the FedEx man stopped by my house today—to drop off a copy of my book!
The book officially comes out April 1, so I had been wondering how soon I would get an advance copy. When I saw the truck slowing down I wondered if this was the moment and it was a little surreal to discover it was.
It’s been a very fun afternoon flipping through the book (I got just the one copy) and watching loved ones do the same. My husband is currently in our room reading, and I think the highlight was hearing my nine-year-old tell me he just *had* to bring this to school tomorrow. A very exciting time indeed.
Slowly Toward Potty Progress

It was wonderful to get such thoughtful and encouraging advice on my post about our potty woes with our three-year-old. Thank you!
Without going into too much detail (she’s three, but she still deserves some privacy) I will say that your advice was eye-opening for me and gave me some ideas I hope will lead to eventual success.
In the meantime, the situation is messy and frustrating and not a lot of... READ MORE
It Happened!

The snow has fallen and we could not be happier. It started this afternoon, and it’s still coming down. We’ve got real accumulation too, not just little five-inch snowmen but actual snowforts and snowball fights.
This snow is a great source of joy and glee and the cause of me hearing phrases like “Look how beautiful it is!” and “I’m having the time of my life!” and also “I think this is a miracle.”
Wonderful, indeed. Happy Snow Days, to all of you, and to my Southern peeps in particular!
Is He Home Yet?

Because of my new resolution to be joyful, I’m noticing the less joyful parts of my life more clearly.
For example, between 4:00 and 6:00pm each weekday, I’m not very joyful.
Those last two hours before my husband gets home from work are the most challenging of my day. During those two hours I’m the most likely to watch the clock, most likely to feel impatient with my children, most likely to wish... READ MORE
Nearly Toddling, Nearly Perfect

I love little babies. I really do. A tiny downy-headed floppy-necked narcoleptic with milk breath is one of my favorite things in the world.
My baby Blaise was born almost a year ago, and I was enchanted with him from the moment he was born. It hardly seemed possible that it could get better. Because this is my second time, though, I knew that it would. A brand-new baby is the sweetest thing in the... READ MORE
Rejoice Always

I was a little stunned when I hopped over here a few days ago and caught Rachel’s post about one-word resolutions for the new year, because before I’d already independently decided on one word that is my resolution for 2010.
Joy.
Our pastor once mentioned in a homily that the shortest verse in the original Greek New Testament is not John 10:35’s “Jesus wept” but 1 Thessalonians 5:16: “Rejoice always.”... READ MORE
A Christmas Blessing
Posted by Danielle Bean in Faith on Friday, December 25, 2009
Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us: for shining star and angel’s song, for infant’s cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child. We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance.
Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wisemen. Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen.

Yuletide Carols

Tonight I was upstairs getting Henry dressed for bed while the other boys, freshly showered, were also getting in their pajamas.
As I wrestled the toddler, one of the boys hollered up that someone was at the door.
“Someone’s here,” he said, “it’s the Wingates.”
“Let them in,” I said, carrying a half-dressed Henry down the stairs.
I got downstairs and walked towards the backdoor, where I was greeted... READ MORE
