Chauffeur Laid Off
Mom desperately seeking job security
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Monday, June 30, 2008
I was recently laid off from a job I’ve held since September, 1991 when my employer announced that he was no longer in need of my services. The position in question – chauffeur for my eldest son, Eric.
I can’t complain that my lay off came as a surprise, but I’m still feeling the pain associated with giving up a role that has been integral to my identity for over sixteen years. Eric, you... READ MORE
Amazing Grace

Two children, actual conversation on the way to Confession:
She: (whining) How come I always get the middle seat?
He: (triumphantly) Ha!
She: Mo-om! No fair, he always gets his way.
He: Don’t be such a baby, you always get your way, and besides, my legs are longer.
She: So?
Et cetera. (You know the tone in which all this was delivered.)
Same children, actual conversation immediately after... READ MORE

Taking Kids to Mass
Posted by Diane Calvin in Features on Monday, July 14, 2008
It was a typically busy week in the Buchholz home, with Craig working long hours at the office and Jen tending to their two energetic young sons. After receiving Communion that Sunday at Mass, Jen wanted nothing more than to spend just a few peaceful moments with the Lord.
Her plans were thwarted by 3-year-old Will, who kicked and screamed his way back to their pew, protesting loudly, “But I want... READ MORE
Kids in the Kitchen
Posted by Danielle Bean in What's Cooking on Monday, July 14, 2008
I love cooking with my kids — as long it’s my idea. When I am attempting a seven-layer cake or a complicated company recipe, I prefer to go solo. Of course, it always seems to be at these times that eager faces gather around my kitchen counter, fingers threaten to dip into my mixing bowls, and little ones mouth the measuring spoons.
If the idea of kids in the kitchen sends your perfectionist heart... READ MORE
Suffer the Children

A few years ago Benedict XVI asked that all Catholics learn the basic prayers of the Church in Latin to facilitate our praying together, so we made it a practice to pray a decade of our family rosary in Latin every evening. They’re used to it now, but at the time our kids’ reactions were decidedly mixed. I was reminded of this recently when Joseph, our newest reader, took a turn presenting the meditation... READ MORE
A Father Avenged
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Just me on Saturday, August 02, 2008
Special occasions were accompanied during our childhood by my father’s light verse—the composition of which he’s delightfully continued for another generation, punctuating the births of grandchildren and family weddings with inside jokes set to rhyme. I wouldn’t bring this up except our eldest son just took this picture of our youngest. I have never seen a photo capture a character so precisely, and... READ MORE
Are We Having Fun Yet?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Monday, August 04, 2008
It’s August and the end of summer is on the horizon. Here, we won’t go “back to school” until the second week of September, but I know many of you start earlier than that.
There’s no time like the present for squeezing a bit more fun from summertime with your family. What have you planned to do this summer but haven’t gotten around to yet? A day trip to the water park? Berry picking? A trip to the... READ MORE
Taking Back Bedrooms

I sometimes walk into my kids’ bedrooms and wonder at the messes I find in there.
“How did it get so bad in here?” I’ll ask aloud.
The kids usually just shrug. No one sets out to make a mess. It just kind of happens. Bit by bit.
When I wrote about kids and their messes in the May/June issue of Faith & Family magazine, I heard from some moms who said, “Yes! That’s me! Now tell me how I can either... READ MORE
Found in the Laundry
Posted by Danielle Bean in Homemaking on Friday, August 08, 2008
Rex, the family’s favorite rooster, has been molting. Consequently, this is what I have been finding in my laundry these days—feathers. Lots of them.
I must say, I prefer pretty feathers to live snails, silly putty, beetle collections, and other laundry surprise possibilities.
I can’t be the only one who fails to check pockets. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever found in your laundry?
