Panda To Me

which kid movies are worth seeing?

Can you stand another movie post this week?

This time I’m soliciting your advice.

Is there a kid movie this summer that’s worth forking over the outrageous fortunes it now takes to see a flick in a theater?

I’m asking specifically about Cars 2 and whichever Kung-Fu Panda this is, but if there’s something else meritorious, please steer me towards it.

Every parent has his own take on what is and... READ MORE

First World Problems

Are you aware of the twitter hashtag “#firstworldproblem” ?

It catalogs complaints from people who don’t actually have anything to complain about.

Not that I accuse any of our perfect children of having the out-of-control sense of entitlement being mocked here, and I know many of us do not share this lifestyle…

but Rachel’s post on boredom made me think of it.

Warning: one minor vulgarity.

Mom, I'm Bored!

What to do, what to do

Let’s have a little contest called “Mothers Helping Mothers.”

It goes like this. I say, “Mom I’m Bored,” and you give one or two of your favorite responses to that statement.

Of course, practically speaking I think it’s up to the child to figure out how to entertain himself. As my mother always told us, “I’m not a cruise director!” Kids are smart. They can find things to do.

But it’s also nice, at... READ MORE

Choosing Favorites

A little observation

I have noticed something lately, a funny little detail about being a mom and running the show and making lots of choices. Here it is: when it comes to making decisions, I choose what I like best.

That probably sounds like a no brainer, but it has occurred to me lately that I might be inadvertently training my children to have the same yens as me. When I reach for the yogurt at the grocery store, I... READ MORE

Cool Catch

Play ball!

It’s baseball season, and that means awesome photos and videos of people catching—and missing—fly balls.

One of my favorites making the rounds is this awesome lady, catching the ball while holding a baby!

And from the fine fellows at Creative Minority Report is this footage of a dad having to make a tough choice—between his kid and the ball. What did he decide? Hmmmm.

Have you ever caught a ball... READ MORE

Do Your Kids Have Some Art to Share?

Faith & Family is seeking submissions

Would your kids like to see their art work published in Faith & Family magazine?

We’re seeking for submissions for the Playroom page of our summer issue. We’d love to have some drawings or other art work featuring feast days and special saints for the months of July and August.

Some ideas include Maria Goretti, Kateri Tekakwitha, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Assumption, and Maximilian Kolbe ... but there are lots more!

To send us a submission, scan the art work, and then email it to me at danielle@daniellebean.com along with your child’s name, age, and hometown. All ages are welcome to participate.

I can’t wait to see what you send!

The Weird and the Wild

Ferrets! We have ferrets!

When my oldest son was visiting at Easter, he and one of my daughters shared some fond memories of a pet ferret we once had (whose untimely demise I did not mourn), and unbeknownst to me, offered to pay for another one should said daughter ever wish for it.

I’m not entirely sure how this happened — the kids must have drugged me — but within a week there was not one but two ferrets in our home.

Well,... READ MORE

Moving So Fast

My cousin posted this on Facebook. Kids will think it’s cool. Mothers will weep at just how true it is.

The Anti-Show-Off

Do your kids have Trick Pony Radar?

Our two-year-old is talking like crazy these days - complete, complex sentences - but if you visited us and met him, you’d never know it. He clams right up when a stranger is in the room.

Do your kids do this? I first noticed the phenomenon when my daughter was a toddler. She was a chatterbox at home, but never said a word in public or at friends’ houses.

And it’s not just with talking, and not just... READ MORE
