Kindness to Others

Being "there" in the hard times

Years ago, before any of our boys were born, I suffered a miscarriage. In that time of sadness and grief, I was blessed by the cards and meals, the beautiful flower arrangements and understanding words showered upon us by family and friends.

Soon after we came home from the hospital with Henry a few years ago, some friends of ours experienced a similar hardship, a miscarriage of their first pregnancy.... READ MORE

The Beach Ball of Kindness

What was lost is found

Rebecca’s recent posts about “random” acts of kindness have stuck with me the past few days.

In particular, I thought of them this afternoon when I was at the lake with my mom and some of the kids.

We had brought along a beach ball—a recent library summer reading program prize. It was just a cheap-o beach ball, but the kids really enjoyed using it, in the pool at home and at the lake.

So we were sorry... READ MORE

Cruel To Be Kind

http://divaliglassjewelry.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/kindness.jpg

True kindness is never “random,” I opined a couple weeks ago.

I’m on the road today, but here’s an article that takes my observation even further, placing it in the context of what is necessary for a civil society.

Enjoy reading Richard Reeb’s “When Kindness Is Against the Law.”

Some years back, genuine concern was expressed about the utter lack of kindness implicit in the random acts of violence... READ MORE

Kindness Is The Best Surprise

...but it's not random
fra angelico

I love Christianity!

Let me explain what’s got me exulting in this Pollyanna fashion.

A person I’ve never met did the nicest thing for me yesterday. I’ll keep him anonymous so as not to embarrass him, especially without his permission, but it involves an author and blogger I’m sure at least some of you would recognize.

About a year ago this gentleman posted a request for prayers for a priest friend... READ MORE

How To Talk To Your Pastor

don't forget he's human
http://www.flickr.com/photos/catholicsun/191932856/

While going to greet a priest after Mass many years ago, I accidentally overheard the tail end of a conversation he was having with another parishioner.

She was absolutely excoriating him for the same homily I was about to thank him for.

The homily wasn’t even about a hot-button topic! It was Mother’s Day and he’d preached about mothers and our heavenly mother.

That incident has always stuck with... READ MORE

Love With Your Words

ideas for Lent Day 14

***NOTE: If you’re looking for Small Successes, that post will be up around 12:00 noon EST.

Fast: Every time a child interrupts you today, stop what you are doing and look into his eyes as he talks.

Pray: “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.” — John 10:27

Give: “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” — Mother Teresa
Speak kindly all day long.
