Summer Learning

The calendar may read “summer”, but in our house the learning continues. I learned early on in Eric’s elementary school career that three months without math, reading and writing equates to educational havoc once my boys return to the regular school schedule. Our summer learning schedule has made me envious of our friends who are brave enough to take on homeschooling – what a blessing to “do school”... READ MORE

We’ve had more than our fair share of rain here in New Hampshire over the past several days. We Beans have been more fortunate than some, though. Yesterday’s wild storms and floods left many people with damaged homes and personal injuries. We’ve only gotten a thorough soaking.
With weather keeping us all indoors, though, our boys have been going a little stir crazy. A trip to the library where we... READ MORE

“All the world’s a stage,” said William Shakespeare. Now I know what he means.
Some people ease into a new hobby by knitting or learning to draw. But I wanted to take up acting. So I figured that emailing a big-name theater and asking if they could recommend an amateur-friendly community theater was a reasonably modest start.

I feel very strongly about this:
Math and science are awesome for everyone.
The small Catholic liberal arts college from which I graduated required that all students take one semester of mathematics and two semesters of science as part of the core curriculum, acknowledging that a true... READ MORE
The Power of Perseverance

This morning, I celebrated the accomplishment of one of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2008! I’m a big resolver, so back in January I wrote a series of blog posts about my resolutions for the year, including this post about my goals related to learning and professional development.
For the past few years, I’ve been learning to knit. Let me say that I’m not a crafty person, so this has been a big... READ MORE
Using the Brain God Gave Him

This morning I went to grab a banana for Henry’s breakfast and as I reached for the bunch, a horde of fruit flies burst on the scene. I hate fruit flies. Or perhaps I should say I really dislike them—they are a part of God’s creation after all. Maybe I would like them just fine if they weren’t in my kitchen. Or not.
I heaved a sigh and started to slap the air in a mostly futile attempt to kill off... READ MORE
