Reflecting on this Lenten Season
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Thursday, April 05, 2012
I’m always amazed, the older I get, at how often I reach this point in Lent—the Triduum—and realize that my Lenten season has strayed so far from what I’d originally envisioned when I prayerfully discerned my fasting, prayer and almsgiving prior to Ash Wednesday.
For a long time, I would arrive at Holy Thursday with a sense of failure—I’d slipped, given in to my worst temptations, and never prayed... READ MORE
Let Him Wash You

“Simon Peter said to him, ‘Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!’”
– John 13:9
Call on Christ today — the same Christ who broke bread, passed the cup, and washed the feet of His disciples. Feel his healing hands. Open your heart and let Him in. Let Him feed you. Let Him quench your thirst. Let Him wash you clean.
More to read and pray and do today.
Bean Me Up!

Lisa’s request for fish-free meatless meal ideas reminded me that I’ve been meaning to share a recipe for black bean soup.
I love beans, or the idea of them anyway - so nutritious! so cheap! - but I’m kinda spacey about remembering to soak them the night before. I’m embarrassed to admit how many bags of dried beans have spent years languishing in my cupboards.
Enter the slow cooker, and this recipe,... READ MORE
Non-Fish Fridays
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Homemaking on Thursday, March 22, 2012
Yesterday, over on CatholicMom.com I was blessed to share three amazing non-fried fish recipes to enjoy on Lenten Fridays (or any night of the week). I was conversing with my Facebook friends about how yummy they looked and swapping other recipe ideas, when one brave mom ventured to ask the following question:
“What non-fish Lent meals are staples at everyone’s house? We’re not huge fish lovers though... READ MORE

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
So who likes to play master of their own universe? Who has asked God for advice in their decisions today? Jesus says in the Gospel repeatedly “Be Not Afraid”.
I heard this song once. The refrain said “I hereby resign being master of my universe and humbly turn the reigns... READ MORE
Lenten Adventures

I was going to give up sugar in my tea for Lent.
A hot sweet strong cup each morning is one of my daily pleasures, and I thought sacrificing it would be just enough penance in a life that is, day-to-day, already pretty tough.
But on Tuesday before Lent started, the day I posted this, it suddenly came to me that denying my sweet tooth was not enough. Instead, here was my resolution: to stop feeling... READ MORE
Wash Yourself Clean

Tuesday, March 6
In the first reading from Isaiah 1, God commands us, “Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s pleas, defend the widow.”
These commands are specific and direct. The first command is to wash ourselves clean. How do we become clean? What better way than the purifying... READ MORE

I’m still trying to find the “Brothers in Black” who are the creative geniuses behind this video—but this one is too awesome not to share. I’m gong for a high score this Lent—how about you?
Repent and Believe

Repent, and believe in the Gospel.
In today’s Gospel the Son of God is driven into the desert by a Spirit and is tempted. We know that Jesus is fully God and fully human, the GOD-man. So here he allows the spirit to drive him into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Jesus accepts God’s will to go into the desert and be tempted for forty days knowing that it is part of the divine... READ MORE

If you’re still in the market for some Lenten resolutions, either because you’re getting a late start or like to add on as you go,
Ironic Catholic has some unusual suggestions.
(I like her list from last year, too).
More seriously, but still humorously, click here for your lenten penance flow chart.
