Book Listening

Got audio book suggestions?

Next month my husband is taking his first-ever solo road trip with our daughter.

Camilla gets carsick, so travelling with her is complicated. She can’t read or watch videos or do anything but sit in her car seat and stare out the window. She’s pretty good at singing/talking to herself, but she still needs amusing about 30% of the time, a task that usually falls to the parent in the passenger seat.... READ MORE

Bringing Books Back

Even if they're WAY overdue?

Have you ever been embarrassed to return a book to the library because it was so overdue?

Well, I bet you’ve never beaten this record: a man in St. Louis recently returned a book he checked out almost 65 YEARS ago.

Apparently the library was so glad he returned it, they waived his late fee. No promises your library will do the same if you’re not a World War II veteran, though.

Read the whole story - it’s pretty neat.

How to Stop Paying All Those Library Late Fees

Inquiring moms want to know

Yesterday, when I posted on Facebook about the lovely, predictable silence that encompasses my house following a trip to the library, my friend Betsy asked a good question:

“How do you keep the books straight? After a trip to the library, we might have 30 to 40 books, which always results in late fees. I’m just not organized enough! Its hard to keep them in a designated spot!!”

Now, anyone who knows... READ MORE

In Search of Picture Books

Will you help with suggestions?

The children’s section of our local public library has a special area reserved for board books, a cute little structure that looks like a house and has shelves all over the outside. For a long time we would head right to it when we got to the library, and Camilla would happily fill our bag with the sturdy little reads.

But Camilla is three now and I’m pretty sure we’ve checked out every board book... READ MORE

Library, Updated

A worth-it trade

As a lifelong library-lover I have fond memories of libraries in the days before computerization.

Remember?  The card in its little pocket inside the book’s cover, the librarian efficiently removing the card from each book and stamping it?  I had respect for those librarians, who could move through whole stacks of books at lightning speed.

At home, of course, we played Library every time an old stamp... READ MORE

Very Library

Reading for free!

Based on the response to my posts about the books I love, I know I have quite a few fellow voracious readers here.

I average two or three books a week, unless I’m taking another stab at The Brothers Karamazov (which I’ve never managed to finish).  I used to read much more before diaper-changing started taking away from my reading time, but it’s still my favorite hobby.

We own a fair number of books,... READ MORE
