The Results of Your Prayers

Meet My Grandbaby!

Introducing Harald Anthony Martin Mathie, my first grandchild. The one I asked prayers for just about two weeks ago when he was delivered at 28 weeks’ gestation.

Baby is doing very well. He’s been breathing on his own right from the start, and seems to resent the c-pap oxygen feed, frequently pulling it off as if to say, “I don’t need this thing!” It will probably be removed in another week or so,... READ MORE

A Woman's Place

we can change the world

The very first Eucharistic congress was held in 1881 in Lille, France. The very first organizer, according to Vatican Information Services, was a woman.

It is not widely known that the idea to hold these congresses came from a woman, a French woman called Emilie-Marie Tamisier, one of the many lay people to dedicate their lives to the defence of the Church at a time in which anti-Catholic polemics... READ MORE

Father Knows Best

When God hands us unexpected blessings

Over at Sipping Lemonade, Lauren has a beautiful reflection on the birth of her daughter six months ago.

Baby Kate, to the surprise of her parents, was born with Down Syndrome. The news came as a shock, which quickly turned to humble gratitude.

[It’s been] six and a half months since we finally decided on her name in the delivery room – a decision that seemed so hard to make (almost providentially)... READ MORE

Finding Baby Jesus at Home

He's closer than you think

Here’s a thought my sister shared on her blog that really spoke to me this week. In light of our conversations about finding time/making time/praying for time for prayer, I thought it might be helpful to some here as well.

Many of us moms have heard the phrase “your whole life is a prayer!” and some of us might even have begun to suspect that it’s a cop out.

Well, it sure can be, but I think these... READ MORE

True Faith

What is Catholicism all about?

Our parish got a new priest last weekend, a priest reassigned to our parish to replace the outgoing priest.

This will be our third priest in five years (our tenth priest in thirty years) and it’s hard not to wonder what in the world in wrong with us. How do we keep scaring off these men so quickly?

The truth is there is a whole host of issues at our parish, none of which I’ll go into here. But that’s... READ MORE

Book Worm

the good, bad and ugly

I am currently in book number four of a charmingly wonderful series of books (hint: I am in love with a dog named Barnabas).

It has been so fun to start reading this series now because each time I finish a book there is another one just waiting for me at the library. Already written, no waiting list, sitting there on the shelf in the hopes of my visit.

Today I spent hours reading, and it was wonderful.... READ MORE

Feel Like Crying?

This might just do the trick

Tim Dunn’s mom sent me an email with a link to this video. Here is what she told me about it:

“This is my son who works in campus ministry at Xavier University. He wrote this song for his twin brother’s wedding.  It is a reflection of what happens when family relationships are valued and cultivated in our daily lives.”

I think you’ll agree he has reason to be proud of her big boys.

Some Comments on Comments

You know what made me sad recently?

I was reading this discussion over at Rachel’s blog when I came across a couple of comments that made it clear that some people avoid visiting Faith & Family Live because of the tone of some of the discussions here.

One said:

The large blog (where I’m assuming this backlash took place) is a wonderful thing that has blessed, inspired, and helped me MANY times. But... READ MORE

Happy Birthday to ... a Whole Bunch of Us!

There’s going to be a bit of celebrating and cake-eating in the days ahead ...

Today, is our dear Rachel’s birthday. On Wednesday, both Rebecca and I will turn 23 wink and then next Wednesday, Lisa will be celebrating her birthday on the 15th.

This year will be a special birthday for me—my oldest daughter, Kateri, will be confirmed that evening and that will be the loveliest gift I could hope for.

Please join me in wishing all these other lovely Faith & Family ladies a whole lotta love and happiness (and chocolate) on their birthdays!
