Veggie Police

who's in charge of your kid's lunch?

A preschool student at a North Carolina elementary school recently had her lunch taken away and replaced by the school’s “healthier alternative” when someone noticed that the sandwich she brought didn’t meet the requirements for healthy fare.

Instead of the sandwich, the girl was given the cafeteria’s option, which included chicken nuggets and vegetables (which the child opted not to eat).

I could... READ MORE

Good Morning Noontime

Breakfast for Lunch!

There’s a reason that many restaurants serve breakfast around the clock, and it isn’t only that burly all-night truckers like French toast, too.

It’s that breakfast often contains both sweet and savory elements, making for an appealing meal that wakens all of the taste buds.  Good Morning, Noontime sandwiches introduce a bit of breakfast sweetness to the noonday meal, while keeping it well-balanced.... READ MORE

The Teen Lunchbox

Help me out!

OK Team, I need your suggestions. Out here in Fresno, we’ve got the lunchbox blues. Perhaps my malaise results from boredom, from too many years of stuffing the same four items into a brown bag and seeing half of it return uneaten, or seeing it forgotten in the back on my car after morning dropoff.

Our lunchboxes are lacking - pizzazz, excitement, and yes possibly good nutrition too!

Now that I only... READ MORE

Lenten Lunching

Scrap Wraps Fit the Bill

What’s a three-letter term that’s synonymous with “meatless midday meal”?

If your answer is “PBJ,” we’ve got good news for you:  There are plenty of other lunch options for Lenten days of abstinence.

But you already knew that. You’ve seen the enticing pictures of vegetarian meals in magazines. You’ve scanned the ingredient lists and read the recipes. You’ve tasted these meals in your mind, and they’ve... READ MORE

Croutons and Beyond

How do you build a better salad?

A combination of Lenten resolutions and a goal of healthier eating has me turning to salad for at least one meal a day lately.

The trouble with salad, especially daily salad, is that it gets awfully dull after a while. I can start out with the best of intentions, but before I know it, I hear a small voice inside my head when I open the fridge and reach for the greens.

The small voice says something... READ MORE

Too Two

How does this work again?

Toddlers are such a mystery. One minute they are staring at you with big, beautiful brown eyes full of love, mouth covered in whatever they just got their chubby little hands on. The next, they are climbing onto the arm of the couch and flailing their body, full force, onto padded cushions.

Or is this just my toddler?

Henry has recently discovered the fine art of being Two and my goodness it’s throwing... READ MORE

A Nice Slice Of Peanut Butter

would George Washington Carver approve?

Peanut butter slices? Egad.

I’m not sure I can get behind a product that uses “funner” in its advertising. But the website did teach me a new word.

Arachibutyrophobia.

The fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth.

Lunch Box Blues

This mom's got the blues over "bag vs. box"

I knew it was inevitable…

Adam took off for his first full day of eighth grade this morning with his lunch in tow, nondescriptly tucked into a brown paper bag.  His trusty insulated lunchbox and cool reusable containers tossed aside in favor of something more socially acceptable.

I shouldn’t have been surprised!  I remember Eric making the transition from box to bag back when he was in junior high. ... READ MORE
