Clash of Rights

The DC City Council’s refusal to grant a conscience exemption to its new recognition of same-sex marriage has had immediate effects on the Archdiocese of Washington.
First Catholic Charities had to close its foster care program.
Now comes the news that in order not to violate Church teaching on marriage, the Archdiocese will no longer extend health care coverage to any spouses.
Spouses currently... READ MORE
40 Bags and Fighting Fatigue
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Thursday, February 25, 2010
On this week’s episode of the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above) Arwen, Rebecca and I do a “progress check” on the 40 Bags in 40 Days project and I admit to being a slow starter! We discuss remembering why we purge and organize during Lent - more than just “spring cleaning” this is meant to be a spiritual exercise that draws us closer to Christ and one another... READ MORE
Marriage Support En Español
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Marriage on Thursday, February 25, 2010
Strengthening marriage is a high priority for our bishops as you know.
To complement their popular website For Your Marriage, last week the bishops launched a Spanish version, Por Tu Matrimonio.
Por Tu Matrimonio is not a translation of the English site, but shares its aim of being a support for couples seeking to live out their vocation.
Both sites contain advice for couples thinking about getting married, testimonials, tips on how to meet commonly-encountered challenges in marriage and links to additional resources.
As internet resources, they’re available not only for US Catholics, of course, but for anyone.
Old Married Couple
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Marriage on Tuesday, February 09, 2010
“Old married couple” isn’t necessarily complimentary.
You don’t want to be caught bickering like one.
There’s a nice feature in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, however, in which several couples whose marriage has passed the test of time offer tips.
I’m not certain I want to pattern my love on the Osbourne family (among others), but I was touched by Sharon Osbourne’s main reason for not leaving... READ MORE
My Husband Doesn't Share My Passion for My Faith
Posted by Fr. John Bartunek, LC in Faith on Wednesday, February 03, 2010
Q: My husband and I have been married for 18 years. Though he is Catholic and attends Mass weekly, I think I take my faith more seriously than he does. I say “think” because he doesn’t like to talk much about his faith. He also does not like to pray with me. I don’t want to cause trouble, but this makes me sad. I feel like we could grow closer to God and to each other if we shared our faith more. ... READ MORE
Valentine Help
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Marriage on Saturday, January 30, 2010
Will you help me?
I’ve been asked to do an interview about what Catholic women want for Valentine’s Day.
I don’t think I know.
So… what do we want for Valentine’s Day?
The Other Vocation Crisis
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Marriage on Tuesday, January 26, 2010
“Priest shortage.”
That’s what usually comes to mind when we hear the term “vocations crisis.”
In an interview last summer, however, New York’s Archbishop Dolan said the real vocation crisis in our country is in matrimony, not holy orders.
Take care of matrimony, he said, and there will be no shortage of priests and religious.
It is a truism of spirituality that marriage and consecrated life are bound together such that what harms one harms the other.
And vice versa.
Last fall, spurred on by what they see as far too many people who don’t really understand what marriage is—“either as a natural institution or a Christian sacrament”—the bishops of the United States released a pastoral letter on that topic.

Is He Home Yet?

Because of my new resolution to be joyful, I’m noticing the less joyful parts of my life more clearly.
For example, between 4:00 and 6:00pm each weekday, I’m not very joyful.
Those last two hours before my husband gets home from work are the most challenging of my day. During those two hours I’m the most likely to watch the clock, most likely to feel impatient with my children, most likely to wish... READ MORE
Casual Fridays - Teamwork
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Friday, January 15, 2010
Every Friday, when I linger here to ponder work issues, I say a quiet prayer of thanksgiving for my most important co-worker, my husband Greg. That’s him over there, holding that ridiculously oversized cover of my new book (coming soon!). The thing is, without Greg’s support and encouragement, none of my life’s major joys and accomplishments would have been possible.
Wednesday night was the perfect... READ MORE
Eating Out Again
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Wednesday, December 30, 2009
On January 3, 2009, my husband and I went out for a fancy dinner. I was eight months pregnant, and as we ate delicious fondue he mentioned that it would be a while before we’d get another chance to have a really nice meal out together. I’m an optimist, so I thought it might not be so long. He’s a realist, and he predicted that it would be one year.
Although we’ve had a few short meals at nearby chain... READ MORE
