The Mission of The Sick
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Faith on Thursday, February 11, 2010
The Pope celebrated Mass for thousands of the sick in Rome this morning.
It was part of his observance of the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of the Sick.
Adding to the occasion, the relics of St. Bernadette were present.
His homily is just lovely, but this meditation on a line from St. Paul is amazing, I think:
From this text, which contains the foundation and practice of the sacrament... READ MORE
Support a Catholic Artist

Isn’t this image of Our Lady beautiful? Every time I see it, it stops me in my tracks.
It’s a painting by the contemporary artist Cameron Smith. He has done a similar painting of the Sacred Heart that you can see at his blog.
The good news is that prints of these inspiring works are available for purchase. I can’t think of a lovelier addition to your home or a more thoughtful gift for any Catholic... READ MORE
A Priest's Mother
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Wednesday, January 13, 2010
This morning, we are traveling to the funeral of a dear friend’s mother. Our friend, the Catholic priest who celebrated our wedding and baptized our children, is burying his mother today.
There is something so blessed about the mother of a priest—in many ways she is an example of Mary, mother of the first priest. I have found that many priests do indeed have a special connection with their mother... READ MORE
Saints of Christmas: Mary, Mother of God
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Faith on Friday, January 01, 2010
From Pope Paul VI’s Apostolic Exhortation, Marialis Cultus:
“The Church’s reflection today on the mystery of Christ and on her own nature has led her to find at the root of the former and as a culmination of the latter the same figure of a woman: the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ and the Mother of the Church. And the increased knowledge of Mary’s mission has become joyful veneration of her and... READ MORE
Being Like Our Mother

Our pastor is an excellent homilist and will often make a point so striking that I wish I had a notebook with me so I could write it down immediately. Then he’ll keep talking and I’ll realize it’s something I’ve known all along, and was simply failing or forgetting to think about in the proper way.
With his homilies he brings the truths of our faith back into focus and helps renew them in our minds... READ MORE
Falling In Love With Mary
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Reviews on Friday, October 23, 2009
Recent convert from Episcopalianism David Mills has what looks like a great new book on Mary.
Discovering Mary: Answers to Questions about the Mother of God tells the story of Mills’ coming to love Our Lady.
I haven’t yet read the book, but it caught my eye because of Mills’ recent column on what Protestants really think of Mary—and how we Catholics sometimes aren’t very helpful in clearing up any misunderstandings:
this is something that many Catholics just don’t get. Priests and laity ask me about this, as a convert who’s written a book on Mary. They confidently give me what they think are winning arguments that are, in fact, hopelessly in-house, deeply Catholic arguments that would leave the inquiring Protestant cold, and in some cases quite offended. The Marian realities are so clear to them that they just can’t see how others can’t see them as clearly as they do. This keeps them from speaking effectively about Mary.
Looks good!
(For the record, I mention this because it interests me, not for my profit and not at anyone’s behest.)

Fatima Film Debuts Next Week
Posted by Danielle Bean in Reviews on Thursday, October 08, 2009
You can read Daria Sockey’s review of the newly-released film about the story of Fatima, The 13th Day, in today’s feature article.
Says Anthony Ryan, Director of Marketing for Ignatius Press, the North American distributor of the film:
“The 13th Day is an antidote film for our time. It is a reminder that a thin veil exists between our world and the next. The Message of Fatima is a relevant wake-up call to a culture torn apart by abortion, war, and injustice. Every Catholic, perhaps every person, should see this film.”
Check out Catholic Screenings to learn more about where you can register for a screening of this inspiring new film.
Comparing Notes on Captivity

Wow.
This CBC interview between Melissa Fung and Ingrid Betancourt is simply an amazing thing to watch. The abbreviated version is 15 minutes, the longer version is twice that but absolutely worth your time.
Ingrid Betancourt, a Colombian-French politician, was kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and held hostage for six and a half years.
In the video linked above, she is... READ MORE
