Joyful, Joyful

Enjoy this moment from this week's TOB Congress

I was able to capture this special moment from the closing Mass at the National Theology of the Body Congress this week.  It was such a beautiful ending to a fantastic few days.  Cardinal Justin Rigali was our celebrant, and the site of so many priests concelebrating together was a true joy.  Enjoy!

Mass Blessings

Have you attended Mass in another cultural setting recently?

This weekend, the boys and I had the pleasure of attending the 10:15 am Chinese Mass at the lovely Ss. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco.  The church sits beautifully on Washington Square, its spires visible from many parts of the city.  In our suburban home, we typically drive to and from Mass, so even being able to walk to Mass was a special treat.

But the most amazing blessing of all was worshiping... READ MORE

Kids in Mass and Gift Etiquette

Join us for this week's podcast!

Download Podcast

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), we discuss the joys and challenges of keeping little ones tuned in and quiet during Mass.  Are you in this phase with your children or have you successfully navigated the “antsy kid” trials?  What strategies work for you?  Have you ever considered attending separate Masses to “divide and conquer”?

For this week’s Faith &... READ MORE

A Feast of Confusion

Happy Ascension Thursday!

Is today a Holy Day of Obligation in your diocese? Or is today Ascension Thursday minus the obligation while you wait to celebrate the feast on Sunday?

As someone who has always been confused by the movement of the feast (and it’s not moved for me—we’re heading to Mass at noontime today), I appreciate Fr. Z.‘s annual rant in which he explains why he thinks moving the feast day is a bad idea:

Folks,... READ MORE

Obedience Is The Heart's Leap

Big doings in Catholic Washington on Saturday!

At the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, they celebrated the first solemn high pontifical mass there in 45 years!

The occasion was the 5th anniversary of Benedict XVI’s pontificate, and the mass was in the extraordinary form.

Everything about the mass is said to have been beautiful, but people are raving about Bishop Slattery’s homily. “The best... READ MORE

Peace During Mass

Finding it in an unusual way

Some Sundays, Mass goes well. Some Sundays, not so much.

I’m sure we’re not the only family this happens to, right?

This past Sunday was challenging. Blaise needed a diaper change just as we were walking in the door. Bryan missed the processional while he was taking care of that. We forgot to bring Camilla’s little Bible and Mass books, plus we were at my parents’ parish and they don’t have a Liturgy... READ MORE

First Friday Mass

a family tradition

For the past few years, Paul and I have made an effort to take our family to Mass on the first Friday of every month.

It’s a sweet little tradition that we all (boys included) really love. The Mass is celebrated in the gym of our boys’ school. It starts at 7 a.m., followed by a light breakfast and then the boys head off to class.

We finally made it back this morning after a long hiatus—when I wasn’t... READ MORE

Yes We Scan

From Poland, a creative approach to checking Mass attendance

This story from CathNews USA caught my eye this morning and had me checking to make sure it wasn’t April Fool’s Day:

A Polish priest in the country’s southern town of Gryfow Slaski has installed an electronic reader in his church for schoolchildren to leave their fingerprints in order to monitor their attendance at mass.  The pupils will mark their fingerprints every time they go to church over three... Meeting Him at Midnight

O Come Let Us Adore Him

A few years ago, when our pastor suggested that we Beans attend Midnight Mass for Christmas, I balked.

What?

We only had about a million kids. We were supposed to wake them up in the middle of the night and drag them to a 2-hour liturgy?

Really?

Yes.

And we have ever since. What a blessing the midnight Mass has been for us!

I love to watch my children approach the nativity scene at our church at... READ MORE

Christmas Traditions Old & New

What are some of your time honored traditions?

When it comes to Christmas, one of the longest standing family traditions in my family is the eating of pizza for dinner on Christmas Eve.  I think my parents struck on the idea when their five young children, preoccupied by the thought of opening presents, refused to eat anything but pizza.  They gave in two years in a row, and a tradition was born.

It’s not a very religious tradition, but it is... READ MORE
