What's Cooking, Mom?

Share your plans for dinner!

I recently borrowed The Best 30-Minute Recipe from the library, and it’s been fun flipping through the pages and getting inspired with quick, easy and delicious-looking recipes for family dinners.

I say “delicious-looking” because I haven’t actually tried any yet. I bought the ingredients for two of the recipes so far, but with a stomach bug raging through the house, it doesn’t exactly feel like the time for culinary experimentation. Tonight, I’m making pancakes for those family members who are managing to keep down their meals. Pineapple glazed chicken and skillet lasagna will have to wait.

In the meantime, I thought it might be fun for us to share some real-life dinner inspiration here. What are you cooking these days? What’s on the menu for dinner tonight?

Fitting in Five

Sneaking more fruits and veggies into our diets

Arwen’s lovely veggie post earlier this week left my mouth watering.  Perhaps I was tantalized by the incredible photo of all of those fresh veggies lined up so neatly, just waiting to be roasted.  I felt inspired, and yet when I walked into my kitchen to find something to bake, I lost my motivation.

My search for fresh produce yield three semi rotten apples, an onion, a brown banana, and some raisins... READ MORE

How I Feed the Masses

Trial and error in grocery shopping

Lisa S. writes:

I’m wondering if you might mind sharing how you manage to keep groceries. I’ll clarify, enough groceries around your house with everyone home all the time. I am literally 1 1/2 blocks from the store but cannot seem to keep enough food here. Do you bulk shop? Do you plan meals? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!

Hmmm. Shall I begin with an ugly confession?... READ MORE

Your Guide to a Stress-Free Thanksgiving

a work schedule keeps you on track and on time

Are you hosting a Thanksgiving gathering at your house this year? If so, I am here to tell you this:

Breathe. Relax. You can do this. It’s going to be just lovely.

We’ll be hosting Dan’s dad at our house this year. I am sad that my sister and her wonderfully big family won’t be able to join us like they did last year, but we truly are a wild enough gang all on our own.

Whether you’re hosting a small... READ MORE

Meals for Other Families

What works well?

When we were kids we got to eat a lot of one of the best kinds of food there is.

Most of us probably failed to appreciate it at the time.  I know I did.

Sorry, Mom!

That excellent category of food: Meals Other People Prepare for You.

Since having a baby six weeks ago, I’ve gotten the chance to enjoy a number of dinners in this category.  This includes all the meals that my mother cooked for us when... READ MORE

Christmas Menus

What's traditional at your house?

I always make Pork Pies for our Christmas dinner. Mixing meat with potatoes and then serving it between layers of flaky pie crust seems an appropriate nod to my French-Canadian roots this time of year.

Besides, my family loves it and it’s easy for me to make the pies the day before and bake them on Christmas day.

I’ll share my recipe here in case you are interested, but I hope that you will share... READ MORE

On-the-Go Gourmet

Mama done good

Our oldest son began his basketball season yesterday. I’ve been a little out of practice since the soccer season ended, so I found myself unprepared for the dinnertime rush.

As I finished up afternoon projects and prepared to drive Eamon to the gym, I quickly realized that the spaghetti and meatballs I had planned for dinner would not be happening.

As I put on my shoes and grabbed my coat, the kids’ meal plan changed to chicken nuggets with ... goldfish crackers. I am not proud of this, but these are the kinds of things that sometimes must be done.

Five-year-old Gabrielle, however, was more than pleased with my culinary efforts.

“Wow, Mama!” she beamed as she feasted on goldfish. “I think you have finally come up with a dinner that everyone likes!”

What’s for Dinner?

share your plans

Even those of us who enjoy cooking can fall into a culinary rut now and then.

Rachel’s recent post about the success of her menu planning party started me thinking about sharing dinner ideas.

I’ve recently found frugal dinner inspiration at 5 Dollar Dinners, a blog devoted to sharing inexpensive recipes. There are some creative dinner ideas there I never would have thought of trying on my own.

I used to belong to a mom’s message board where someone would regularly ask, “What’s for dinner?” and all the members would chime in with their dinner plans. Seeing what others planned was always helpful and inspiring.

So I thought we could try that here. You don’t have to type out your recipes, just share your menu—what’s for dinner tonight?

Clean Slate

This morning, we are off to the grocery store.

I’ve been putting off shopping for as long as possible for a variety of reasons. For one thing, I prefer to go without the big boys, whom I love dearly despite the extra money they cost me when we shop together. As they are at a local basketball camp this week, the timing seems right. I’ve also put off going because I need to make a menu (a challenge... READ MORE
