Where Are You From?

The response may surprise you ...

“I’m from the east coast.”
“I’m from New York.”
“I’m from a little town near Naples, Italy.”

When we’re asked the question, “Where are you from?” our answer usually relates somehow to our home town, place of residence, or nation of origin.

But “where we’re from” means so much more.

Last week, I shared this reality with some teens and pre-teens in a writing workshop. I was trying to impress upon them... READ MORE

Video On!

The camera that helps me capture moments

I think we can all agree that technology is a mixed bag - like any neutral thing, it can be used for good or ill - but can I tell you what? Sometimes a particular item of technology makes me really glad to be raising my kids in 2011.

Currently, that item is the awesome Christmas present I got from my husband: a Flip video camera.

When I was a kid, video cameras were expensive monstrosities that parents... READ MORE

Childhood Memories on Film

Remembering Mom

We gave a special gift to my dad this Christmas.

After years of talking about it and trying to find a projector that could handle the project, we had all of our old 8mm movies transferred to DVD format.

Sitting with my own family, watching the voiceless images of my childhood — set to music of the time by my sister and her husband — it was impossible not to be nostalgic. As I narrated the “who’s... READ MORE

Hello, Dolly!

a blast from the past

At the store recently, I grabbed a birthday gift for a niece—a tiny little Strawberry Shortcake doll.

I had these same dolls as a girl and when I sniffed the plastic case, a wave of memories washed over me. My sister and I had a nice little collection of “Strawberry Shortcakes,” and I remember my favorite being the Angel Food doll with her white hair and fresh scent.

I’m looking forward to more of... READ MORE

Going Back

Reunions: yay or nay?

This weekend I was blessed to attend my college reunion.

Not my class reunion, but the reunion of my entire college, a now-defunct school that has a total alumni population of only a couple hundred people.

I helped organize the reunion, and we were excited to have over a hundred attendees, including several dozen children. If there’s anything better than seeing old friends and classmates, it’s seeing... READ MORE

Singing to Sleep

What lullabies do you love?

When I was first married and thought of my future children, one of the things I most looked forward to was singing them lullabies.

We didn’t have Michael Card’s album Sleep Sound in Jesus until I was in high school, so I don’t have memories of hearing the songs on it when I was a small child. But once we got the album, even though I was far too old for my mother to sing me to sleep any more, I promptly... READ MORE

Game Over

Are you sad?

I’m just curious if anyone out there is sad the World Cup has come and gone? Do you miss the sound of vuvuzelas buzzing through your home?

Our family had a lot of fun watching a lot of games, but I suppose I’m glad it’s over. We had another family over to watch the final game yesterday and that was a nice way to round out a very fun first-half-of-summer experience. The World Cup comes but once every four years and I bet when I look back, years from now, I will have fond memories of watching these games with my husband and crew.

Under the Big Top

we can all have heart failure

We are back from a very exciting, harrowing, grand adventure to The Circus. What a time!

Here’s the thought I had, during the nearly three hours we sat watching the cutting-edge flips and daring deeds: what has become of me?

Growing up, my family went to the circus fairly often. My parents brought us whenever it came to town; this was one of those “special things” we did as a family. I loved it and... READ MORE

Eating Out Again

A first-year milestone

On January 3, 2009, my husband and I went out for a fancy dinner. I was eight months pregnant, and as we ate delicious fondue he mentioned that it would be a while before we’d get another chance to have a really nice meal out together. I’m an optimist, so I thought it might not be so long. He’s a realist, and he predicted that it would be one year.

Although we’ve had a few short meals at nearby chain... READ MORE

Looking Back

Taking a peek at 2009 and wondering what lies ahead

I love this week of December - it’s always a retrospective time for me.  This year has been a treat since we’re “staycationing” at home and luxuriating in hours of rest and relaxation.

One of the things I did this week was take a peek back at my calendar for the past year.  Wow,  no wonder I feel the need for a break!  We had so many highlights during 2009 - so many reasons to count our blessings! ... READ MORE
