Where Were You When The Wall Came Down?

Twenty years ago today, the Berlin Wall came down.

Follow this link to watch the late Peter Jennings interrupting programming to break the news.

My father more or less dedicated his life to bringing down Communism, so of course our family followed such things with marked interest.

I remember very clearly a summer Saturday morning when Dad was sitting in bed reading his papers and I came in to talk... READ MORE

Stuff Moms Keep

What "treasures" are you hanging on to?

The lovely piece of artwork you see pictured in this photo was a “treasure” I created in my schoolgirl days, during my “painted plaster” phase.  This dazzling work of art, “Girl Bathes Lion”, hangs with its companion piece, the equally fantastic “Girl Bathes Hippo”, in my mom’s laundry room.

I was teasing my mom last week during my visit about how she’s moved these and several other beautiful works... READ MORE

Fringe Benefits of Staying at Grandma's

Frosted banana bars are a special treat

Today is the last full day of my extended stay at my parents’ house this week, so the kids and I have been taking full advantage of the privileges here.

One of the yummiest of these fringe benefits has been my mother’s baking. At Grandmaman’s house, baked goods are served often— even at breakfast.

While I would worry about fat content and sugar if breakfasts like leftover Frosted Banana Bars were... READ MORE

Retro Eating

What are the favorite foods of your childhood?

I’ve been on a quest recently to persuade my two-year-old that she really wants to eat macaroni and cheese from a box with cut-up hot dogs in it.

She remains unconvinced.  She likes the two foods separately, but is suspicious of the idea of them together.

It’s not that I have a strong desire for her to eat mac-and-cheese with hot dogs.  I just want to make it so that I can eat it and relive my childhood.... READ MORE

What Surprised You in 2008?

Every new year brings new adventures

Our family has spent the past few days vacationing in San Francisco.  Part of the bliss of such trips is the chance to spend uninterrupted time in conversation with my husband and teenage sons.

The other day, we were reminiscing about the past year, as families frequently do prior to New Year’s every year.  The thing that struck me about the conversation were how many completely unanticipated events... READ MORE

Family History

Missing my grandparents, many years later

I sat down to write something here this afternoon and happened to check the site first—Lisa’s thoughts on the importance of family history were along the same lines of what I have been thinking about today!

This afternoon, my ten-year-old interviewed me for a school project.

“If you could spend an afternoon with anyone, dead or living,” he asked, “who would it be?”

I thought for a moment of all the... READ MORE

Sweet Memories

What really matters

When I look at this picture, I feel an ache. This is a beautiful moment that I treasure.

Because even now, I know that when this season of our life is over, this will be one of the moments I miss the most.

Christmas Memory Quiz

What’s best for your kids: the coolest new thing or the meaningful family thing? Take our quiz and see.

MEN: What was the Christmas gift from your childhood that you most cherish?

A. Rock’em Sock’em Robots (or that Firebird Trans-Am model), because it was the hippest thing that year.

B. Deluxe Electronic Erector Set (or Pong game), because it was expensive, regardless of the use I got out of it.

C. The Old West Canteen my dad picked up on a business trip to Colorado, because Colorado seemed exotic... READ MORE

Of Happy Memory

What's your favorite memory of John Paul II?

I’m astonished to note that John Paul II was elevated to the Papacy 30 years ago today.

I wasn’t Catholic in 1978, and my sense of Catholicism and what it is like came largely from him.

A couple of favorite moments:

1) While I was living in Rome after graduation, on a Wednesday afternoon I happened to have off, I went to St. Peter’s and scanned the line of people waiting to attend the papal rosary... READ MORE

Ten Years Later

Reflections on growing up

Tonight marks exactly ten years since Bryan and I went on our first date together.  I was just sixteen and he was almost eighteen.

To celebrate, we’re going to Applebee’s, which was our incredibly creative choice for our first date.  So the venue will be the same.

Other than that, everything will be different.  We’ll have Camilla with us.  Bryan will probably order a margarita.  I will regret not... READ MORE
