Spurt Moments

What have yours been?

“I’m nervous,” I confessed to my husband last night. He raised an amused eyebrow at me.

I knew it was silly, but I couldn’t help it. I felt like I was the one who was going to be tested.

This afternoon (as I write this, actually) Camilla is talking to the teacher whose class we hope she’ll be in next year, answering questions about reading and math and proving that she’s ready for first grade.

I’m... READ MORE

Babies Up!

What's your favorite milestone?

Our twin babies were six months old in November, and we celebrated. Half a year. We’ve made it half a year. Phew.

(We figure with two babies, we’ve done a full baby-year, so six months is like a first birthday in those terms.)

What’s even more exciting than our babies being six months is what they’ve newly started doing.

See that picture? It’s Linus on the left, Ambrose on the right, both of them... READ MORE

A Big Kid!

Camilla turns four

Last week was a big one in our family - a few days after we found out about the pregnancy, Camilla turned four!

She was thrilled, of course. The moment her eyes popped open in the morning, she chirped “It’s my birt-day!” The rest of the day, though low-key, was lots of fun.

By the following day my girl had moved on. “Now I’ll be five next. I’m just gonna keep getting bigger, Mama,” she said to me.... READ MORE

Dental Adventure

How did your kids' first visits go?

Today was a big day for our three-year-old: her very first dentist appointment.

I was not expecting it to go well. That is putting it mildly. Camilla is cautious and does not like to try new things. I’ve seen her upset to the point of throwing up at the prospect of having her hair washed. By her own mother. In her own home.

She was at the dentist with my husband and me for our last cleaning six months... READ MORE

Not a Baby Anymore

Our girl reaches age three

When we were waiting and praying that God would send us children, I thought a lot about babies. Sweet cuddly babies, with rosy cheeks and soft hair. Tiny ones are achingly cute, literally: I ached when I saw one.

Eventually God blessed us with Camilla, and my focus on babies increased throughout my pregnancy and her first years. This year gave me another chance to immerse myself in babyhood with Blaise’s... READ MORE

So We Cut Off All His Hair

and I am trying to be okay with that

Remember this little mop top?

I think I almost can, but alas ... he is no more.

It happened so fast, I’m not sure what to make of it.

Last week, I was on the front deck cutting a big boy’s hair with the clippers (Because we’re classy like that—Haircuts! On the deck!) when I noticed Daniel noticing. He seemed more curious than terrified, so I took advantage.

“Danny,” I called to him when I was through,... READ MORE

Three Times His Original Size

Celebrating six months with our baby

Have you heard it said about parenting that “the days are long but the years are short”?

The first time I heard that saying, I nodded emphatically.  Staying home with little ones often does make the days seem long.  The years, on the other hand, are short.

Or in this case, the half-years are short.  Blaise was six months old on Sunday, and I’m bewildered by how quickly my tiny, barely-sentient eight-pound... READ MORE

Four Years Pay Off

My sister graduates from college!

I mentioned last week that my sister and I were planning to take a trip with our babies this past weekend, to attend our sister Miriel’s graduation from college down in Florida.

So, we went.

It was definitely a grueling weekend.  Our forty-eight-hour whirlwind trip had us getting up at 4am on Friday and 5am on Sunday to catch flights, and the hours in between were packed, including a 1.5-hour baccalaureate... READ MORE

First Quarter Conquered

We made it!

I’ve mentioned before that the first three months of a baby’s life are not my favorite time with him.

Before Blaise was born, Bryan and I had managed to carve a routine with Camilla’s bedtime so that we had a couple hours each day to be alone together, tidy the house, and relax before our own bedtime.

Blaise’s arrival sent that out the window.  With two kids instead of one, we were on the move from... READ MORE
