Happy Mothers

Says You: Do Catholic Moms Need To Chill Out?

“Motherhood is not my highest calling,” says blogger Elizabeth Esther.

That provocative headline got my attention, and so did the premise that misplaced idealism regarding motherhood is ruining it for everybody:

This incredible weight of expectation places an almost impossible burden on mothers and non-mothers alike.
When we artificially inflate the importance of motherhood, then average, everyday,... READ MORE

Now if Only I Could Fly

A loving child’s compliments never get old. This recent exchange with my dear 7-year-old Leah reminded me of that.

I fearlessly rescued her favorite doll’s shoe from the crack between the bed and the wall. Apparently, that earns you some serious points.

Excitedly, she shrieked to her doll: “My mom did it!”
“Mommy saved the day! Mommy saved the day! Wow, Mommy, you’re like a superhero!”

Many blessings to you in all your supermom moments today.

Tales from the DIY Diary: Part 2

How many people does it take to unscrew a water hose?

Go read part one from my DIY (do it yourself) diary about installing a new faucet. I quickly learned that this DIY monster project was too fierce to tackle by myself and I needed help. With the Queen of DIY (my mom) and a couple of nephews in tow, we were ready to tackle step two.

Step two: remove the hoses from the faucet.

The hot water hose came off no problem. Sweet! Just like the video. This... READ MORE

Stage Fright

Overcoming Fears at a Local Talent Competition

I’m involved in a farmer’s club with my Mom and Aunt. I never go to meetings; my mom pays my dues; and the only things I do attend are the roast beef dinner (to eat) and the annual talent contest (because my mom made me go).

My mom is in charge of making sure there are entries for the A-number and talent portion of the contest so she usually asks my cousin Mary (another reluctant member) and me for... READ MORE

Depression Busters for New Moms

What are your strategies for dealing with the "baby blues"?

I remember distinctly the morning of January 3, 1992.  That was the day, circled in red on my calendar, when I was supposed to return to my full time career as a hospital recruitment manager.  Instead, a series of decisions and circumstances found me embracing “stay at home mom” status in the company of four month old Eric.  I was thrilled with my decision and happy that Greg could pick up extra shifts... The View from My Office Today

Taking a few days for a "mom retreat" is a wonderful thing!

Let me apologize in advance for the fact that this post may spark a bit of envy in some of you who are still experiencing frigid temps or who haven’t had a moment to yourself in the past thirteen years.

I contemplated keeping my good fortune this week a secret, but couldn’t help but share with you the wonders of a “mom retreat”!  Yesterday, after taking Adam to the airport for his D.C. trip, my... READ MORE
