Tiny Little Things

(yet another) reminder to savor

Last night a variety of factors converged in a sleep trainwreck: Linus and Ambrose both awoke every two hours all night long.

Six wakeups each times two babies. Do that piece of math and you’ll understand why I crawled out of bed in a stupor this morning.

But blessedly, I checked my email soon afterward and found a message from a dear aunt whose two boys are now in their twenties. She’d gotten our... READ MORE

Feed Your Soul

all things lovely

Yesterday I met my sister-in-law at a park halfway between our homes. From our opposite ends of the state, we each drove toward each other for about 90 minutes and then shared lunch and the joy of chasing our preschool children around a beautiful green-space.

On the drive home, instead of taking the interstate, I decided to find my way back using two-lane highways. It was bliss.

The weather was window-down... READ MORE

60 Minutes

The toughest hour of the day

My least favorite part of the day is that stressful time when people in my home are tired and cranky and hungry and the house is sometimes a wreck and all in all we’re not doing so hot.

This time is of day generally lasts about an hour, and around here it’s from around 5 to 6 p.m. I know because I am acutely aware of its imminence and always glad when it’s gone.

What is it that makes these sixty minutes... READ MORE

Holding the Baby

before the next one comes

When I was pregnant with Blaise, I thought often about how his birth would mean the end of my one-on-one time with Camilla. Juggling the needs of two children would necessarily change the dynamic around our home, one in which I’d previously paid swift attention to my daughter’s every need and been aware of every change in her life.

I was sure that the gift of a sibling would more than make up for... READ MORE

Now if Only I Could Fly

A loving child’s compliments never get old. This recent exchange with my dear 7-year-old Leah reminded me of that.

I fearlessly rescued her favorite doll’s shoe from the crack between the bed and the wall. Apparently, that earns you some serious points.

Excitedly, she shrieked to her doll: “My mom did it!”
“Mommy saved the day! Mommy saved the day! Wow, Mommy, you’re like a superhero!”

Many blessings to you in all your supermom moments today.

A Baby's Baby

The cycle continues

Camilla runs past me and I pull her in for a hug, which she loves.

She kicks her feet and giggles delightedly as I nuzzle her neck. I whisper, “I love you, baby girl.”

Suddenly she’s serious, twisting to meet my eyes with her wide ones. “No, Mom. I’m a big girl!”

(“Mom!” It just kills me.)

“Of course you are, sweetie, but you’ll always be MY baby.”

Camilla laughs as if she thinks I might be teasing... READ MORE

Now Moments

Sacrifices worth making

The plan tonight was to go out to dinner. My sister had agreed to babysit. I was wearing a pretty sweater and big hoop earrings. We were looking forward to indulging ourselves, Easter-style.

Blaise started wailing as we headed toward the door. That’s normal, and he gets over it quickly. But then Camilla, our big girl who usually closes the door behind us with a smile and a cheerful wave, instead attached... READ MORE
