How I Began to Know My Mother

A little about me and my devotion to Mary

Hello, Faith & Family readers!  It’s a pleasure to be guest blogging this week.  My topic will be Mary, and every day, I’m going to use a different topic as a jumping off point for a discussion of Mary.  I got my ideas for each day’s topics from the forums.

Now, for a confession:  I’m not an expert on Mary in the traditional sense.  I’m only a wife/mom/daughter who has learned to turn to Mary for... READ MORE

‘Keeping Women Down’ With Breastfeeding

Is pro-nursing literature oppressive?

Well, well, well.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before I read a feminist, anti-breastfeeding article like Hannah Rosin’s The Case Against Breastfeeding in this month’s Atlantic (HT: Crunchy Con).

Rosin is unconvinced by medical evidence that breastfeeding is a superior form of nutrition for human babies. And she may have a point there. Some of the studies comparing breastfeeding to formula... READ MORE

I Have Not Arrived

but the boys still love me

When I was pregnant with Henry, it seemed like the nurses and doctors at my OB’s office were always wanting to give me too much credit.

“You already know how this works,” a nurse would say before taking some blood or measuring my abdomen. Most times they were right, of course—this was my fifth baby, and so much of this drill was clear in my head. But sometimes I needed to be reminded about a “how”... READ MORE

Small Successes

I'll take what I can get

Some days, it feels like I might be failing ... as a mother, as a wife, as a homemaker. But that is only when I fail to recognize the fact that many small triumphs can add up to one big one.

Here, my small successes from yesterday, a day which just so happened to be one of those days:

1. When my 7-year-old son was repeatedly bouncing up and down on the couch singing, “I’m a teapot-I’m a teapot-I’m... READ MORE

Getting Away

Taking time for spiritual rejuvenation

This weekend I’m going to my parish’s annual women’s retreat.

I’m a little apprehensive because it’s my first night away from Camilla, ever.  I’m excited, though, because it’ll be my first lengthy stretch of alone time since Camilla was born.  I’m also excited because our parish’s retreat was wonderful the last time I went, and I’m expecting the weekend to be very spiritually rewarding.

I’ve written before... READ MORE

Mom’s To Do List

When did everything become nothing?

Paul and I are discussing our schedules for tomorrow. We have been planning a meet-up to pick out new cellphones (we reached the time limit on our contract to get the deep discount—yippee!) and thought we’d rendezvous at the phone store while the boys are at school.

Me: Are we on for tomorrow?

Him: Let me look at my schedule. What do you have going on?

Me, looking at my calendar: Nothing really. I... READ MORE

Playing Dolls

Grown women play with fake babies

Okay. When I saw a description of this video clip from the Today Show, I was prepared to be disturbed. Grown women playing with dolls—dressing them, naming them, talking to them, and taking them out in public? It’s creepy, right?

But the whole concept didn’t turn out to be as weird as I anticipated. These women aren’t so much creepy weirdos as they are collectors with an eye for beauty. These expensive... READ MORE

Parental Grace

  * is the only thing that prevents me from crying out, “What do you want? For the love of all that is lovable, what on earth do you WANT already?” when the baby cries out “Mama, Mama!” just one more time at the end of a long day.

  * is what helps me keep a straight face when a 6-year-old boy glances nervously backwards and asks in all earnestness, “Which shoulder does your guardian angel sit on?”... READ MORE
