Were the 'Good Ole Days' Really Any Good?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Thursday, January 27, 2011
Rachel inadvertently kicked over a hornet’s nest yesterday with her post about the differences between modern day and old fashioned parenting styles.
I decided it was best to close comments there, but I don’t want anyone to feel that the discussion the post generated is being shut down. I think there are good and bad things that could be said about both the more relaxed style of parenting of the past and the more “protective” parenting many of us practice today.
Are modern day parents controlling and over-protective? Were parents of previous generations neglectful and abusive? I have hunch that the truth is somewhere in between, but I hope you will weigh in with your thoughts and observations.

On the Importance of Scented Candles
Posted by Danielle Bean in Homemaking on Friday, November 12, 2010
I almost decided not to write this post.
Every time I write about something even a little bit frivolous that makes me happy in my homemaking, I am sure to hear from a few disappointed readers.
There are more important things to write about. Of course there are.
There are holier things to write about. Of course there are.
There are brainier things to write about. Of course there are.
But I can’t help... READ MORE
"Mommy Brain" Better
Posted by Arwen Mosher in News on Friday, October 29, 2010
Here’s some good news for moms: giving birth may make your brain grow!
Some new research published by the American Psychological Association found that grey matter volume of the 19 new mothers studied “increased by a small but significant amount.”
I’m no scientist (as yesterday’s post proved, ha!) so I can’t critique this research, but I enjoyed reading about the possibility that our bodies might actually build our brains up in order to equip us to take care of new babies. How cool is that?
You can read more details here.

UPDATE: There are now over 50 comments. This is the point at which our comments pagination kicks in, and it gets a little hard to post “replies” to particular comments. To see the comments over 50, please click the page two (2) link at the top of the list of comments. Sorry for the confusion—I know it’s not ideal!
Let me begin by saying I am a big fan of breastfeeding. I have nursed all of my babies... READ MORE
