Year of The Priest Movies
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Reviews on Friday, June 26, 2009
Did you catch our sister site’s Top 10 Priest Movies?
That list excluded foreign films and stories about bishops and cardinals, but it sparked a blog conversation. B-Movie Catechism has some other choices, as does The American Catholic. More in comments here, too, and this post has some interesting choices.
My top picks would be On the Waterfront, John Ford’s The Fugitive, I Confess and The Cardinal (since he doesn’t become a Cardinal until the end, I don’t think it violates the “priest” rule).
Any these lists miss? Which are your favorites?
The Stoning of Soraya M.

Due in theaters next week on June 26th is The Stoning of Soraya M., a film that had been touted by Catholic reviewers and leaders who have screened it. Here’s the summary from the film’s website:
From the filmmaker who produced “The Passion of the Christ” comes a powerful film, a modern-day parable, based on an incredible true story of sacrifice, oppression and mob rule. A village’s persecution of... READ MORE
Land of the Lost Is a Loser

Some of my favorite childhood television memories took place during the 70’s (yes, I’m that old!), sprawled across the avocado green shag carpeting watching classics like The Brady Bunch, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. Saturday mornings meant “Land of the Lost” and hanging out with Marshall, Will and Holly on their adventures in an alternate time and place. Maybe it’s this original... READ MORE

Here’s how it works:

Big Thumbs Up for ‘Up’
Posted by Danielle Bean in Reviews on Monday, June 01, 2009
If you haven’t yet heard about Up, Pixar’s newest release, you must not have young kids in your home.
The good news about the hype surrounding this film is that the movie lives up to it. And then some, in my opinion.
All 7 of the kids (ages 4-14) I brought to see it on Saturday night gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up on the way out of the theater.
In his review at the National Catholic Register, Steven... READ MORE
Great Pick for Weekend Flick

When Children of Heaven arrived from Netflix last weekend, Dan read the description on the sleeve and ... declined.
Shoe-sharing Iranian children? Subtitles? No thanks, he said.
But I didn’t let that discourage me. I watched it all by myself one night and let me tell you ... Dan missed out.
This is such a beautifully made, touching film. The story is so very simple that I will not even comment on... READ MORE

A Vote for Henry Poole
Posted by Danielle Bean in Reviews on Tuesday, April 07, 2009
After reading Tom Hoopes’s recent review of Henry Poole Is Here, I had low expectations for this newly released DVD.
But I watched it last weekend anyway. And I was pleasantly surprised.
It’s hard for Hollywood to get a movie about faith “right,” and Henry Poole Is Here doesn’t handle the topic perfectly. But it did a pretty good job of inspiring me and told a decent story with realistic, likable... READ MORE
