What Your Kids Will Be Wanting Soon

Today's "Stevenote" offered a few goodies

If you’re not a geek, you likely didn’t even know that today was the “Stevenote” - a major Apple announcement of some new devices, software and other goodies that we geeks can’t seem to get enough of.  These famous keynote speeches have Apple fanboys (and fanmoms) tuned in online and Tweeting away before, during and after the talk.

Today’s announcements largely centered around upgrades to the iPod... READ MORE

Love

A musical look at love....

A special thanks to Sr. Margaret Kerry, FSP, who shared this on Facebook today.  I loved this video - stunning visual effects and an examination of what “true love” really means.

Music to Birth By

What do you listen to while in labor?

Strangely enough, though I typically have some sort of music playing morning, noon and night, I have never listened to music during any of my previous four labors.

I just stumbled across this article, though, and I think I just might like to try incorporating music into my upcoming birth experience. The article states that “if you choose the right music, you can increase your body’s production of... READ MORE

Wild Innocent Joy

Backyard by Felicita

Here’s a sweet gift of joy a reader emailed me this week.

Six-year-old Felicita wrote and performed this catchy song all by herself. Her four siblings sing and dance along with her, her uncle shot the video on his iPhone, and her dad produced the recording.

The reader who emailed wrote, ” It showcases, I think, the richness and lightness and purity of Joy - singing a little melody and dancing with her sisters, I feel like little Felicity is letting us witness what Chesterton calls ‘the gigantic secret of the Christian.’”

I have to agree. Watch for yourself and see how infectious and attractive genuine joy can be.

Music & Memory

The Duet from Rebecca Teti on Vimeo.

You know what I feel false nostalgia for?

Home music recitals.

Young ladies exhibiting their skill at the pianoforte in Jane Austen or the Christmas dance in Fezziwig’s shop or the impromptus between the Captain and Doctor in Patrick O’Brien’s Master & Commander series: these things give me both delight in reading of them and a mild sense of loss for a time when... Singing to Sleep

What lullabies do you love?

When I was first married and thought of my future children, one of the things I most looked forward to was singing them lullabies.

We didn’t have Michael Card’s album Sleep Sound in Jesus until I was in high school, so I don’t have memories of hearing the songs on it when I was a small child. But once we got the album, even though I was far too old for my mother to sing me to sleep any more, I promptly... READ MORE

What Would Bach Think?

Christ, the same through all time and culture

I laughed out loud when I read Jimmy Akin’s post at the National Catholic Register earlier this week: Alien Robots Worship Jesus!

While the robot version of Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring was interesting, I prefer a more traditional version, like the Celtic Woman one above (Though I find the gowns and dramatic lighting distracting—does anyone else find that?).

But either way, I love that Johann... READ MORE

Atheists Just Sing The Blues

Since the discussions between believers and non-believers can be contentious, I hope you enjoy this fun little ditty.

New Media Tool for Catholic Parents

Culture Gauge helps parents navigate popular culture

As a parent of growing kids, I find that navigating popular culture is a never-ending and exhausting task. What is okay to let the kids watch, see, and listen to? What kinds of television, music, movies, and video games are being marketed to children today? It can be challenging to keep up.

Finding the answers is never easy, but I am convinced that protecting our kids from negative influences and... READ MORE

Closet Performer

from singing in the shower to appearing on stage

I love to sing. I sing in the shower, I belt it out in the car and I even hum in the office.

I love driving with the windows down (with the music blaring) and singing at the top of my lungs. Sometimes on long car trips I put in a Broadway musical CD and pretend I’m the main character.

When I’m in my room listening to music from Oklahoma, Ragtime, Annie or any Broadway musical, I act out the part... READ MORE
