Chant to Inspire

A song for Saturday

A few years ago, my parents and I had the opportunity to visit Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, Alabama.  It was such a moving experience that I created a video which is now featured on the Grotto’s website.  While in Cullman, we enjoyed mass at St. Bernard Abbey and were treated to chant by the Monks of the Abbey.  Today, while searching YouTube, I came across this video which features chant by the Monks of St. Bernard.  Their music is the perfect thing to savor during Lent.  Once you’ve enjoyed this, please take some time to visit their website, which includes a virtual chapel, their fantastic candle shop, and more information about the Benedictine monks who live and pray together at the Abbey.

Catholic Pick-Up Line Song

A song for Saturday...

This one has been making the rounds on the Catholic blogosphere, but it’s too cute not to share!  “Sing Along” is the ultimate Catholic “pick up” song from David Casper, who seems like a super guy and a great catch for any Catholic girl who’s in the market… although with “Sing Along” he may have girls lined up. So visit David’s website, check out his music, and share “Sing Along” with your friends, especially those in need of good pick-up lines!  Enjoy.

Sing We Now

A tale of merriment

There was a knock at my door this evening. My house was quiet, my big boys and husband all at basketball practice. I had just put our toddler down for bed; the baby was fast asleep.

I opened the door to find a group of neighbors staring back at me. They were bundled up and armed with flashlights and songsheets—they were here to carol.

I greeted them and then asked if I could grab my three-year-old—he... READ MORE

Joyful Anticipation

another Advent hymn

One of the beautiful things about the liturgy during Advent - and I never noticed this as a kid, but am increasingly aware of it as an adult - is its eschatological focus. Advent is about anticipating the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas, but it’s also about anticipating Christ’s second coming. The Feast of the Nativity is a whisper of the joy of our ultimate redemption.

I love this Advent... READ MORE

David Sings for Mary

Ave Maria

Remember David Archuleta? The American Idol runner-up from a couple years ago? Well, my 15-year-old daughter Kateri certainly does. Along with about 10 million other 15-year-old girls.

Anyway, she shared his version of Ave Maria with me today and I am impressed. I thought you might enjoy it too on today’s feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Preparation Season

on keeping Advent

Two years ago, I blogged about my new resolution to keep Advent.

I now make that resolution every year. In some ways it’s gotten easier, but I don’t know if it’ll ever be really easy.

In order to keep Advent and Christmas in their proper seasons, we have to hold off on celebrating Christmas while the world is singing about “the most wonderful time of the year.” Then, just when we are given the chance... READ MORE

Sharing Advent Hymns

During the season

As part of our family’s resolve to keep Advent, we’ve replaced the Christmas carols to which we used to listen during December. I’ve amassed a decent playlist of Advent music (including the appropriate portion of Handel’s Messiah) and we’ve grown to love the sound of it during the weeks leading up to Christmas.

But before I made a concerted efforted to collect Advent songs, I knew very few of them.... READ MORE

Country Star Uses Talents to Deliver Pro-Life Message

Pro-Life Lyrics in Popular Music

Over at NCRegister.com, I’ve been blogging about Verve Pipe’s song “The Freshman” and the pro-life meaning behind its lyrics.

I found out about the hidden pro-life meaning in this song’s lyrics through a post at Live Action which includes many others. One of the more blatantly pro-life songs on the list was “The Call” by Matt Kennon (featured in the video above).

When the nurse asked how far along... READ MORE

Matt Maher and Me

This week, I am lucky enough to find myself in Dallas for the University of Dallas Ministry Conference.  Yesterday’s many highlights included two favorite moments: hearing a keynote by blogger Rocco Palmo of Whispers in the Loggia and finding myself in the front row at the Matt Maher concert.  We’ve already discussed my Matt Maher fangirl status (shared by many of my F&F soul sisters), but I have to say he gets better every time I hear him.  This little video, shot on my iPhone, isn’t top quality but will give you five minutes of sheer joy!  At the end of the night, I was even treated to a major celebration as the Rangers won their game and are now headed to the World Series.  The conference continues today, so please pray for all of those gathered here in Dallas who are working to share, deepen, and learn more about their faith.
