Nick that Name

Have you managed it?

Do you have a nickname? Did you choose it?

Perhaps because my name has no easy nicknames and I’ve always just gone by “Arwen,” I’m fascinated by the topic of nicknames.

A few years ago I mentioned that we called my daughter Camilla “Billa,” a nickname we certainly hadn’t planned on when we carefully chose “Camilla Claire” before her birth.

But sometime around age three, “Billa” disappeared and we... READ MORE

Name Secret

Do you share your baby names?

One of the first things that I thought about when I found out we were having twins: baby names.

We’d already decided - having done it both ways, and having liked it better this way - to find out the sex of the baby by ultrasound, but once we learned the babies were twins, we were even more certain that we would. When you’re having one baby of unknown gender, you need a boy name and a girl name. When... READ MORE

Praying for Veterans

Share your names and join in

I highly recommend reading the essay that Rebecca linked to in honor of Veterans’ Day. I found it inspiring and thought-provoking.

In the meantime, in honor of this day, I thought it would be nice to publicly acknowledge the veterans in our lives, both living and dead. What better way to honor veterans than by praying for them?

In the comments section of this post, please list any loved ones who’ve served in the armed forces. If you have loved ones in active duty, feel free to share their names as well. It’ll be our special Faith & Family Veterans’ Day Prayer List.

I’ll begin with my own list in the comments.

What Child is This?

Coming up with a name for your baby

When Henry was born, I thought we had a name picked out. Turns out, the name I like didn’t really jive with my husband. I didn’t know this until after the baby was born and I told people we were thinking about (insert name here) and then Paul kept adding “but we’re not sure.”

Eighteen hours and 10,000 baby names later, we arrived at Henry (a name that had been on the short list with every other boy... READ MORE

Trendy Catholic Names

Do you go with the trendy, or the tried and true?

Rachel’s post from earlier this morning has me thinking about baby names.  I was happy to come across this article from USA Today discussing parents’ reactions to trendy baby names

At the top of the article, you’ll find a totally cool tool that looks at the past century of names, listing the top fifty boys and girls names for each decade.  It turns out that when my parents named me “Lisa Marie”... READ MORE

How Do You Say That?

Navigating name pronunciation

This time of year brings my school memories rushing back.

There were a lot things I loved about being in school, especially in college.  I miss many of them.  I do not, however, miss the job that comes to me and all the unusually-named whenever we are in new situations: explaining to a fresh crop of people how to pronounce our names.

I was in school before the Lord of the Rings movies came out, so... READ MORE

You Called Me… What?

Fun with nicknames

A few mornings ago Camilla woke me with her face in mine.

“Mom,” she said, “I’m going to go find Daddy.”  Then she toddled off to find her father, that generous man having gotten up with the baby so I could get an extra hour of sleep.

My sleep-addled brain knew there was something unusual about this, but it took a few minutes before it dawned on me: she called me “Mom.”

Wait a minute!  What is my... READ MORE

Catholic Baby Names

Just for fun...

I was doing some surfing this afternoon and came across this resource for Catholic Baby Names, which offers boy and girl suggestions and appropriate names by date.

Had I gone with their suggestions, instead of Eric and Adam, I might be calling my sons “Omer” and “Senator” based on their birth dates.

Had I been graced with daughters on these same dates, little “Wilfreda” and “Hiltrude” might be playing Barbies at my house.

On second thought, maybe consulting this resource may not have made my kids too happy!  What are the suggestions for your children’s Catholic Baby Names?
