A Murmuration of Starlings

something beautiful for the weekend

Don’t tell me these birds are not dancing!

Murmuration from Sophie Windsor Clive on Vimeo.

Matthew 10:29:

Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

With a polite nod to ninme.

Eerily Beautiful

wonders of creation

Here’s extremely rare footage of a “leptocephalus”—the larva of an eel.

Isn’t he beautiful?

With a polite nod to American Digest.

Bears in Our Backyard

This isn't cute anymore

Living in a rural area can be an adventure. Some of our encounters with local wildlife are fun—like the times when we spot moose or deer in our field.

But the black bears? I’d rather not entertain them.

Here’s what one of those bad bad bad animals did to our chicken coop last night. The door latches closed and the chickens were put away for the night, so the bear needed to tear open the door before... READ MORE

How An Astronaut Sees Earth

This video from NASA is fascinating in its own right, but I love the reflection it inspires in Msgr. Charles Pope.

It reminds me of a quasi-religious experience I had last Memorial Day when, following the parade on the Mall, I took the kids to the National Air & Space Museum to see Hubble 3-D.

The film is a window simultaneously into two worlds: the practical and precision world of all that goes... READ MORE

Otters & Toddlers

Here is a live webcam of Decorah Eagles parenting a nest of eaglets. Enjoy!

"Supermoon"

tomorrow the moon will be very close to earth

Be sure to look outside tomorrow night for a “beautiful moon.”

That’s a full moon when the lunar cycle is at its perigee—closest to earth.

Tomorrow night the moon will be the closest it’s been to earth in eighteen years, which will make it appear especially large and bright.

National Geographic has more on this phenomenon—and an amusing quiz about moon-related myths and other lunacy.

Prayers for Japan

I usually try to post something a little lighter on Fridays, but this morning I can’t get Japan off my mind.

Whenever I hear about an earthquake, I think of all creation groaning under the weight of sin. This video is awesome in the strict sense—and terrible.

An Act of Optimism

Planting our vegetable garden

Yesterday evening we went to buy plants and seeds for this year’s vegetable garden.

We also bought manure, five bags of it. This was thrilling for Camilla since we used a flat cart to transport them and she got a chance to ride on it. She never gets to stand up in the cart! And this time she got to stand up ON it! So exciting!

She also asked what was in the bags, but refused to believe me when I told... READ MORE

Off to a Good Start

I had to smile this morning when I saw this chart where the Gabby and her younger brothers are tallying their catches for the day.

So far, just one salamander ... but the day is still young and, as you can see, their goals are lofty.

These early days of spring are a temptation to me every year. It’s hard to stay focused on school work and indoor chores when a fresh, warm world beckons from every window... READ MORE
