Beyond Facebook and Twitter
Posted by Melissa Wiley in Reviews on Friday, March 12, 2010
As I’ve shared this week, Facebook and Twitter are the two social networks I use most often. Today I’d like to take a look at some other forms of social media I find useful and fun—and some I don’t use at all.
1) Social media for book lovers
GoodReads is a site that helps you keep track of the books you read. Enter a book title, and you can mark it “read” (past tense), “currently reading,” or even... READ MORE
How to Use Twitter Without Going Insane
Posted by Melissa Wiley in Reviews on Thursday, March 11, 2010
Yesterday I talked about some reasons you might be interested in using Twitter. Today we’ll look at how to do that without being driven nuts by the blur of disconnected information.
When you log into Twitter, you land on your home page. That’s where you’ll see the tweets of everyone you “follow.” You also have a Twitter profile page. That’s where all your tweets are collected in one place. Here’s... READ MORE
5 Reasons I Love Twitter

1) Speed and Ease.
It’s the fastest, easiest way I’ve found to jot down the funny things my kids say, the delicious moments that flit past so quickly: the things I want to remember forever—but won’t, if I don’t record them. I used to use little slips of paper stuck to the fridge, or notebooks that were never at hand when I needed them. A friend recently referred to these home-life tweets as “the art... READ MORE
How to Protect Your Privacy on Facebook
Posted by Melissa Wiley in Reviews on Tuesday, March 09, 2010
One of my 14-year-old daughter’s presents this Christmas was her own Facebook page. With so many of her cousins on Facebook — cousins who live clear on the other side of the continent — we wanted her to be a part of the extended family conversation.
But we’re cautious parents, protective of our kids’ privacy and safety. Facebook’s privacy settings can be a pain for people of any age to navigate,... READ MORE
Streamline Your Facebook Experience

Fire up your Facebook pages! I’ve been invited to guest-blog here at Faith and Family Live this week to talk about social media. Thanks, Danielle, for having me!
Recently, the sudden arrival of Google Buzz threw many Gmail users for a loop — especially mothers like me who were surprised to discover our children’s names and comments showing up on our Buzz pages, right there for all the world to see.... READ MORE
New Media Guest Blogger
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Sunday, March 07, 2010
I am so happy to announce that we’ll have a special guest blogger this week ...
Welcome Melissa Wiley!
For any of you who have not heard of Melissa (like you there, for instance, the one crawling out from under that rock), she’s the homeschooling mother of six, popular Catholic mom blogger, author of The Martha Years books about Laura Ingalls Wilder’s great-grandmother, Martha Morse Tucker, and The Charlotte Years
books, about Laura’s grandmother, Charlotte Tucker Quiner.
She also happens to be a new media maven, and that’s what she’ll be blogging about with us. She’s shared her Catholic iPhone app expertise here with us in the past, and this week she’ll be guiding us through the exciting—but often daunting, confusing, and overwhelming—world of social networking. She’ll help us navigate the basic and not-so-basic aspects of Facebook and Twitter.
How do Catholic moms use these social networks? Why do they? What privacy and courtesy issues should we be aware of when sharing information online? How do we get started?
This week, Melissa will answer all of these questions and more ... Tune in!
Daily Support Throughout Lent
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Saturday, February 20, 2010
You might recall that for the past couple of years Elizabeth Foss and I have shared daily promptings throughout the 40 days of Lent, reminding moms of small ways to pray, fast, and give every day.
Last year, at the end of Lent, many moms asked if these daily devotions were available in book form. Which gave us an idea.
“Why not give them a whole year?” Elizabeth asked.
And so the concept for our joint... READ MORE

It’s not too late to send the pope your personal greeting for Christmas!
At Pope2You.net, sending a Christmas message to the pope or sending a message to a friend with pope’s greeting takes only a click of your mouse. You can use Flickr to share photos or Facebook to send inspired greetings to all your friends.

Google Wave Anyone?
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Have you heard of Google Wave? It’s a new real-time communication and sharing tool from Google.
It’s still being developed, though, and so Google has been limiting the people who have access to it. I got an invitation through a blog promotion a couple of weeks ago and have been playing around with it since. I definitely see a lot of potential for its use in collaborative work—which is very exciting for a writer/editor type like me.
Would you like to try out Google Wave? Now’s your chance! I have 8 invitations to give away and I figured I would do it through a twitter contest.
To qualify for a Google Wave invite, just follow Faith & Family on twitter and then tweet the following: “I just entered to win a Google Wave invitation from @FaithandFamily and you can too! http://tinyurl.com/yd6sus2”
That’s it! I’ll pick 8 at random on Friday, November 20 at 12:00 noon EST and then tweet the winners. Good luck!
