Fitting in Five

Sneaking more fruits and veggies into our diets

Arwen’s lovely veggie post earlier this week left my mouth watering.  Perhaps I was tantalized by the incredible photo of all of those fresh veggies lined up so neatly, just waiting to be roasted.  I felt inspired, and yet when I walked into my kitchen to find something to bake, I lost my motivation.

My search for fresh produce yield three semi rotten apples, an onion, a brown banana, and some raisins... READ MORE

So Sick of Ice Cream

What do you feed a sore mouth?

As I mentioned in today’s podcast, my oldest daughter Kateri had some teeth pulled this week.

Five of them, in fact. One of which was impacted. The poor thing.

The first day was pretty rough and she didn’t want much more than a few popsicles and something to drink.

The next day she was happy to try some ice cream shakes and pudding. I added some Carnation Instant Breakfast to the ice cream shakes... READ MORE

Dress up salads with taste and nutrition ...

FOOD by Danielle

Sensational Salad

Salad is a great way to get your greens. If the thought of the same old tired cucumbers and wilted lettuce doesn’t exactly tantalize your taste buds, though, it’s time your salad had an upgrade. Some new ingredients to throw in the bowl:

• Variety Lettuce: dark greens pack the most nutritional punch
• Olives: loaded with flavor and “good fats”
• Sunflower Seeds:... READ MORE

It's Not About the Scale

But seeing results helps provide motivation...

Last week, I shared with all of you that I had taken myself back to Weight Watchers as my birthday present to myself.  Those of you who have done WW in the past know that sick feeling that comes from falling “off program” and then having to go back at some point in the future and climb back on that scale.  Once the initial weigh-in is behind you, it becomes easier to focus on the journey ahead.

On... READ MORE

Juicing 101

Help me learn to make the most of our new juicer.

I rarely go to Target these days, but last week while I was there I fell prey to an impulse buy:  the Juiceman JM300 Juiceman Jr 2-Speed Juicer

We have four citrus trees in our back yard, but for years we’ve wasted much of the fruit since it’s not very good for eating. The oranges seem to come off the trees dry and a bit pulpy.  Since we’re lazy gardeners, we haven’t taken time to investigate the... READ MORE

How Does Your Garden Grow?

It's time to get busy planting in Central California

Apologies to those of you who may still be facing frigid weather in your part of the country as you read this!  But out here in Central California, it’s time to begin planning this spring’s garden.

On Sunday, the boys and I will head—hoes in hand—to our raised bed in the back yard and begin turning the soil and deciding what to grow.  Last year, our late start led to some pretty dismal results.  So... READ MORE

Weighty Matters

making peace with our bodies

It would appear that I struck a nerve with some of my fellow mom bloggers with my recent post about what I hate about diets.

I must admit, I am feeling a bit misunderstood here. It makes me very sad to think that anyone who struggles with weight loss felt judged by what I wrote.

I did not mean at all to say that diets are always a bad idea and never necessary. I thought I made that clear when I said... READ MORE

3 Things I Hate About Diets

Can't we do a better job of taking care of our bodies and souls?

A beautiful, healthy woman I love and admire once shocked me when she announced her frustration with her inability to lose the last bit of weight from a recent diet regimen.

“I’ll feel better when I get rid of this last 3 pounds,” she told me.

3 pounds??

I think I gain that much just thinking about the ice cream in my freezer. And then I lose it again with one lap around the vestibule of the church... READ MORE

Waste Not

Avoid overcooking this week to help with the fight against wasted food.

Recently, in my hometown paper, food columnist Joan Obra wrote a fascinating column entitled “Rotten food in refrigerator adds up to too much waste”.

Sadly, Joan’s article is not online, but it left such an impact upon me that I wanted to share a few of her most important points with you here and get your ideas on the topic as well.  Joan recommended that in advance of going out shopping for the big... READ MORE
