Oprah's Last Show

the good and the bad

I watched the Oprah series finale this afternoon. Don’t ask me how I pulled it off—I haven’t been able to watch anything at four in the afternoon since my oldest boys were toddlers. But somehow the big boys were all gone and both babies asleep and there I sat, folding laundry and watching Oprah.

I’ll admit I used to watch Oprah way back then. I was on a big kick for a while and really did enjoy the... READ MORE

Mr. Zuckerberg's Ovation

The governor of NJ, mayor of Newark and founder of Facebook turned up on Oprah the other day.

They were there to talk about an exciting bipartisan partnership to improve public schools.

That’s worth knowing about in its own right, but not what actually caught my attention in this video.

Watch the whole thing for context (and you can find part two here), but the striking moment for me begins at... READ MORE

A Gift for Oprah

what the Dominicans taught

In a follow-up to the Dominican nuns highlighted by Oprah, the sisters talk about how they gave Oprah a rosary after the show.

Oprah Winfrey was surprised after her recent show featuring the Dominican Sisters of Mary when the sisters in the studio said they had a present for her. “No one ever gives me a present,” the television star said. Then, as Sr. Teresa Benedicta related in a talk before a packed... READ MORE

Watching Oprah Just This Once

I know we’re not Oprah fans here.

But tomorrow the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist will be her guests.

If you tune in, come back and tell us about it here!

‘The Stem Cell Debate Is Over’

the truth about stem cells, brought to you by Oprah

Dr. Oz recently explained to Oprah, Michael J. Fox and all of Oprah’s viewers why we’re close to a cure for Parkinson’s—and why it won’t be embryonic stem cells that achieve it. Watch this clip and say some out of season alleluias for the truth coming out in a popular medium.

Healthy, Strong and Fit

Weight battle played out in the public eye

I’m not a viewer of Oprah’s daily show, but today it’s been pretty difficult not to hear the news about her “coming out” in the upcoming January issue of O The Oprah Magazine regarding her very public battle with her weight.

The cover and a brutally honest essay, which will appear in the January issue of O Magazine, chronicles her struggle with an out-of-balance thyroid and how the condition gave... READ MORE
