Just Say It

In honor of our kids who "say the darndest things"

Last week, our youngest daughter, Leah, celebrated her seventh birthday. She has always been a child that greets each morning with grins and hugs. But it is her clever banter that keeps us going on the dreariest of days.

She has been caught naming aloud all of the raisins in her bagel — and recently told me something I said was “just plain preposterous.”

Her method of requesting breakfast one morning?... READ MORE

Home Economics

This morning, I needed to take a phone call while the guy from the septic company ... uhhhh ... did his thing out there.

In order to make sure the man was paid before he left, I signed a check and gave it to my oldest son, Eamon, along with instructions for filling in the amounts.

When I got off the phone, I asked Eamon how it went. When he said he had filled out the check with no problems, I began to feel pretty good about my multi-tasking and delegation that had supplied my growing son with a bit of practical experience.

“See?” I said to him, “Now you know how to write a check, and that is a very useful thing to know.”

“Yes,” he grinned back at me, rubbing his hands together. “That is definitely going to come in handy.”

Think we were talking about the same thing?

Sweet Vindication

4-year-old style

Me to Boy Who Never Brushes His Teeth Without Being Told: Did you brush your teeth yet?

Him: Yes.

Me: Really? Are you sure you are telling the truth?

Him: Yes.

I remained skeptical until I entered the bathroom.

Oh yes. Now I believe him.

Queen for a Day

or wannabe anyway

Gabby: When I get married, on my wedding cake, does there have to be a little statue of me and my husband, or can it just be me?

I think we should all start praying for her future husband right now.

Cereal Mistake

A nearby store had a special on my kids’ favorite sugary breakfast cereal last week. As a treat, I bought two boxes.

When I got home, my oldest daughter examined the groceries and found the boxes.

“You only got two boxes?” she sighed. “That’s just one and half breakfasts ... with fights!”

Feeling Pretty

beauty tips from a ten-year-old

“You know,” the boy said thoughtfully as he scrutinized my face, “There’s this stuff you can put on your face to give it some color. I think it’s called blusher. You should try it.”

Exactly!

while watching Cinderella this morning

Boy: Have you noticed that Prince Charming never says or does much?

Girl: He’s not supposed to! He’s just supposed to be ... charming.

Material Girl

learning her love language

Gabby: To me, presents are like a great big chunk of love.

Guilt Trippers in Training

Where do they get this stuff?

This morning, one of the younger boys was whining about having to finish his breakfast.

Big Girl: You know, there are children in this world who are so hungry they would LOVE to have that toast. And then they’d probably eat the plate too.

Big Boy: Listen to your sister. She’s absolutely right.

Creative Pronunciation

in the ear of the beholder

“How do you spell ‘chudder’?” Gabby called out the other day while she worked with crayons and paper at the table.

“Cheddar?” Eamon asked.

“No, ‘chudder,’” she repeated.

“Chowder?” he tried again.

Gabby rolled her eyes.

Chudder,” she said again. “Like when you say, ‘We love each chudder.’”
