Dorm Life
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Thursday, August 26, 2010
Today was the official move in day for Eric, his first “real” day of college life following five days of pre-orientation. First thing this morning we met Eric’s new roommate, Nathan, and his amazing family. The rest of the day was spent setting up their room, making numerous trips to the CVS for forgotten supplies (thank goodness it’s a close walk!), meeting new friends and doing other “set up”... College Life Begins
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Wednesday, August 25, 2010
Greg and I successfully navigated our journey to rainy Boston yesterday, completely unprepared for the weather. Somehow in the midst of all the packing, we neglected to see the reports calling for rain the next few days. We arrived at our hotel toting a mandolin, an electric bass, four rolling suitcases, and not a single jacket or umbrella. We looked like a drowning middle aged rock band, but our... READ MORE

Family Changes and Feelings
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Thursday, August 19, 2010
This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Rachel, Elizabeth and I discuss recent changes in our homes. As Elizabeth and I both watch children move out of the “nest” and into exciting new phases of life, we chat about how moms deal with the emotions related to these types of changes. When you have times of emotion in your life, do you hide your true feelings from... READ MORE
To Be a Good Fledgling

As Lisa writes about sending her son to college, my parents are getting ready to send a kid away to school too.
Except it’s not their first, it’s their last.
My youngest brother, Kelson, leaves at the end of the month to start his freshman year of college in Florida. All of the rest of us have been gone for a while (in my case, a very long while). Mom and Dad are going to be empty-nesters.
Now, my... READ MORE
One Advances, One Retreats

Blaise will be 19 months old on Thursday, but when he was just 18 months, I was worried a mental breakdown might keep me from making it to this point.
Has anyone else gone through this? Dealing with an 18-month-old who makes you think you’ll lose your mind?
I don’t remember this with my daughter, but when Blaise hit 18 months it was like someone flipped a switch. A BAD switch. His already not-stellar... READ MORE
Do Kids Make You Miserable?
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Family on Monday, August 16, 2010
Time. Newsweek. New York magazine.
Mary Eberstadt has a nice column summarizing the recent spate of articles purporting to show that nothing’s more miserable than being a parent.
She makes the point the question is too subjective to be meaningful.
Ask me when I haven’t slept in 6 months I’ll say something different than the day Princess cleans her room without being asked.
She makes a beautiful... READ MORE

Fertility Taxes
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Friday, August 13, 2010
Here’s an interesting take on tax policy: its effect on birth rates.
I know there’s no fiscal consensus among us, and taxes might not be the thing to think about on one of the last Friday afternoons of summer.
But I think you will like the last line at least:
Whatever the details, policies should have a pro-family bias because parenting is… “one of the most important services any American can perform.”
