What the Kids See
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Monday, January 05, 2009
If you went to the mall this holiday season, you were likely “treated” to a large window display like the one Mathew Archbold discusses in a recent post at Creative Minority Report.
Exactly when did it become appropriate to display sexual images to the public? Archbold uses a bit of humor in his description of the mall scene and conversations with his children, but he makes a good point about what... READ MORE
Music for Teens
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Friday, January 02, 2009
The most popular gifts my two oldest kids got for Christmas were iPods. We allowed them to have them with the understanding that we decide what they will listen to.
So far, Kateri has filled hers with Christmas music and a hefty portion of Sarah Bauer hits and Eamon prefers a few carefully selected U2 tunes.
I plan to help them find some new music for their collections, and so I thought I’d ask you for some suggestions. Do your tweens and teens listen to music or podcasts? What do you allow and what do they enjoy?
A Wishbone Wish
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Just me on Monday, December 22, 2008
The other day I found a dried-out wishbone from a chicken I cooked weeks ago.
I was in purge-cleaning mode in anticipation of my family’s arrival, but I couldn’t bear to just throw it out. Throwing out an un-wished wishbone would be like throwing out un-popped bubble wrap. I may be an adult now, but I still have standards.
Neither of us is superstitious, but Bryan was happy to “wish” on the wishbone... READ MORE
Bringing Home the Tree
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Monday, December 15, 2008
This past Saturday we packed up Camilla and approximately seven pounds of toddler outerwear and drove half an hour to get a Christmas tree.
In previous years we’ve bought our tree at the local big-box home-improvement store, which has yielded surprisingly good trees. It’s also incredibly easy.
However, I have wonderful childhood memories of bundling up and going to the Christmas tree farm and trooping... READ MORE
Stroller Science

Have you heard about the recent study that shows babies get “stressed out” when riding in forward-facing strollers?
“Parents who choose a stroller that seats their baby facing away from them could risk long-term development problems in their children.”
When I first heard about this latest bit of parenting news, I thought that perhaps “science” could also prove that reading guilt-inducing studies... READ MORE
How Do You Video?

Bryan and I, like my parents before us, do not have a TV set in our house. Ten years ago we probably would have chosen to own a TV and VCR, but these days we can watch DVDs on the computer and keep up with a couple current TV shows online, so we’re perfectly happy not having an actual television.
We’ve discussed it and decided that we are fine with our kids watching a certain amount of video, amount... READ MORE
Cleaning, Baby!

Life with one toddler and one in utero baby is many things by its nature. Fast-paced is not one of them.
My sister had her second child in July, and watching her deal with two kids has made me realize: I have a limited amount of time during which my life is going to be as simple as it is now. I should take advantage of it.
During the first months of my pregnancy I took advantage of it by spending... READ MORE
Weighty Issues and An Attitude of Gratitude

This week on the Catholic Moments podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), I share two fascinating conversations with women who are striving to make our world a better place as they overcome their own personal struggles.
Ruby Gettinger is the star of “Ruby”, a new television show that chronicles her lifelong battle with morbid obesity. Near 500 pounds and fearing an early death,... READ MORE
When ‘Home for the Holidays” Never Ends

im came home to visit her parents for the Christmas holiday. She hugged her mother Shirley and her father, Deacon Dan. She looked at her brother, with whom she had always been close.
“Hey, Boomer,” Kim said. “How’s the basement these days?”
She had been home all of one minute and the tension was thick. It was the beginning of a week that would change their family dynamic forever — a week that nearly... READ MORE
Not Always Easy
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, October 21, 2008
We now have a two-year-old at our house. I’m trying to focus on the positive by, among other things, rejecting the term “Terrible Twos.”
I like far better the term “Terrific Twos” which Danielle mentioned last week. Bryan and I waited and prayed a long time for our daughter, and the chance to parent her is always a privilege, no matter how much of a challenge it also happens to be.
This is not to... READ MORE
