Last Minute Lector

Have you been called to serve in a pinch?

Last night, I was sitting in the second pew before our 6:00 pm youth mass minding my own business, when suddenly our head usher (who pretty much runs the show at 6:00), came up to me with a worried look on her face.

“Can you lector?”

My response was, “What? Now? Tonight?”

Five minutes later, I found myself processing down the main aisle of the Church, large red book of the Gospels hoisted high over... READ MORE

Is Your Parish Serving Your Family Online?

What online services and support do you desire from your parish?

This weekend, I will be presenting a few sessions at the wonderful Catholic New Media Conference hosted by SQPN.com - the Star Quest Production Network founded by Fr. Roderick Vonhögen.  I know that some of our readers (including my buddies Danielle and Rachel) have enjoyed past CNMCs. It’s a time for fellowship with other geeks and communicators, for stimulating discussions about the Church’s use... READ MORE

Tithing Questions

How do you prefer to give to your parish?

Every Sunday, I sit in the pew at Mass feeling a bit sheepish when it’s time for the weekly collection. The devoted ushers at our parish, garbed in their fine navy blue matching sport coats, push the basket attached to the very long pole in front of me. Every week, I smile at them and keep my hands on my songbook, neglecting to drop anything into the basket. The usual usher in my section of the church... READ MORE

Lent At Your Parish

Says You: How does your parish observe Lent?

While I was on the path to conversion, I had a dear friend who kept needling me to “go Anglican” instead.

(Yes, I was the kind of nerd who stayed up late nights debating ecclesiology. You can’t hold it against me, I’ve been baptized since.)

The day of my baptism, one of our mutual friends taunted, “Aren’t you going to congratulate Rebecca?”

My friend, who’d taken a good run at me, responded, “I see... READ MORE

What Moms Want

Here's your chance - how can your parish better support you?

Next Monday, I have the pleasure of providing a webinar called Catholic Moms: Building and Sustaining Small Groups to Support the Vocation of Motherhood aimed at sharing perspectives on what we parents—and especially we moms—“want” from our parishes.  I would love it if this team of experts could help me prepare my “homework” by pondering and commenting on the following questions:

*  How can your... READ MORE

Lighting The Little Lights

He’s not just the Pope, he’s the bishop of Rome.

Like other bishops, he visits his parishes. On Gaudete Sunday he visited St. Maximilian Kolbe parish, and delivered a lovely homily on the potential of parish life.

Apparently the parish has a large immigrant community, and the Pope had some remarks about communion that are relevant to any parish where multiple ethnic groups are present.

Your community... READ MORE

"Saints" At Mass

take Fr. Z's poll
allsaintsorthodoxchurch.org

Will people come in costume to Mass at your parish on Sunday?

Fr. Z. wants to know, and is sponsoring a poll.

He’s asking a very narrow question about costumes at Mass.

I’m curious how your parish observes All Saints & All Souls days generally.

Anything beyond the special masses for those days? Are your observances private, or sponsored and encouraged by the parish?

Marriage Building Parishes

How does your parish support your marriage?

This week, I have had the honor and pleasure of being a speaker at the annual National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers meeting at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.  They tell me that Cincinnati is a very nice city, but I’ll admit that I haven’t stepped off the campus since I arrived and am headed home tomorrow—so it looks like I’m going to have to plan a return visit to taste the... Is It Okay to "Parish Shop"?

Ask a Priest vol. 2

Q: Is it required that we attend our home parish (just a few blocks away) when possible, or is it acceptable to attend Mass in another town on a regular basis? Our reasons are many, and probably too personal to go into here.

A: This question has a short answer and a long answer.  I will try to land in between the extremes.

The Bottom Line

Strictly speaking, the Church is quite reasonable in what she... READ MORE

Confession Denied

I came, I tried, I was turned away

Remember our confession assignment on Saturday? Go to confession & bring your kids?

Well, I tried to complete it.

I told the older kids to get ready, looked up the time for confession at a parish about 30 minutes away, and we all got into the car.

Confession was listed as beginning at 3:30, and we arrived at 3:35. There was someone already in the confessional, so we began a line.

After two of the... READ MORE
