Confirmation: How Do You Celebrate?
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Family on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Our eldest son will be confirmed in two weeks.
Naturally we’re excited, but I’m curious how others celebrate.
My husband was Confirmed young and doesn’t recall whether he had a party, and I was Confirmed as an adult the same day as my Baptism & First Communion—so between us there is no sense of family tradition on the subject.
We have a meaningful gift in mind, and there will of course be a little party—but I’d love to hear what you do in your homes to mark the under-appreciated, least-understood sacrament?
Prom for Moms

Did you go to prom in high school?
Would you like to go again? Or for the first time?
This one is a little different: it’s for women only, and it’s not just a party, it’s a fundraiser for charity.
Dubbed the “Mom Prom,” this event started a few years ago in an area near where we live, and the idea is apparently spreading across the country. Moms have fun pulling old prom or bridesmaid dresses out... READ MORE

Happy New Year!
How will you ring in the new year this evening—or will you?
I have to confess New Year’s Eve is not an occasion with much meaning for me.
I don’t recall observing it as a kid, and while we Tetis have a home-grown habit of watching a movie timed to end just in time for the falling of the ball in Times Square, this is a thing we do that feels to me as if we do it because it’s done,... READ MORE
Big Kid Birthdays

As I type this, I hear the dull roar of teenagers permeating the corners of my house. Sunday is Adam’s birthday and we’re headed out of town for the weekend to a concert in LA. So tonight (Friday), he’s got a houseful of friends over for a small celebration. I’m reminded that at this age, teens love pizza, soda, chocolate chip cookies, and space. The space part is the hard part - finding a way... READ MORE
Fireworks at Home - Yes or No?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Saturday, July 03, 2010
Every year around the 4th of July, consumer fireworks stands crop up in our city. “Safe and Sane” fireworks are legal here, and many families use them as part of their celebrations. Around our home, my ER husband always has his “doctor” hat on and our use of fireworks is pretty limited. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good sparkler just like anyone else - and we’ve used small legal fireworks many... READ MORE
Girls' Night Out
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Just me on Monday, April 26, 2010
Whenever I hear someone talking about “girls’ night out” I get a wistful pang.
For a social person like me, the idea of party time sans children is very appealing. I’m not talking wild partying here. A tea party would be plenty wild enough for me, as long as I had something to sip and good conversation with my friends and I didn’t have to wipe a nose or change a diaper the whole time. Unfortunately,... READ MORE

8 Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain
Party Plan
Attending a Christmas party doesn’t have to blow your goal of healthy eating. Here’s a plan:
• Eat first. To avoid overeating, have a high-protein, low-sugar snack like nuts, whole grain crackers, or low fat yogurt to satisfy your hunger before attending a holiday party.
• Alternate. For every alcoholic drink you consume, drink... READ MORE

Halloween as we commonly celebrate it is the offspring of two unlikely parents born centuries apart — the ancient druids and the modern market. The druids marked the day of the dead with bonfires, ghoulish tricks, and scary costumes. Centuries later, retailers cashed in. Yet, somewhere in between the vast ages, Halloween got baptized and thus received its Christian name, All Hallows’... READ MORE
