Berry Yummy for the Fourth

Let's share some festive ideas

I happen to think that one of the most fun things about summertime holidays—like the Fourth of July coming up this weekend—is planning fun dishes and desserts to serve at family gatherings.

In my browsing of cooking sites, this Berry Parfait looked easy and delicious.

Rachel shared a yummy flag cake last year as well.

There are a number of festive dessert recipes at Food Network too, especially Paula Deen’s Simply Delicious Strawberry Cake... READ MORE

Pumpkin Mouth

warning: graphic imagery

The Good News is: Our annual Okoberfest on Saturday was all kinds of fun. We had beautiful weather and lots of friends of family. We are blessed in so many ways.

The Not So Good News is: When it came to pumpkin carving, we left our 11-year-old son to his own devices. And this is what he came up with. Makes me wonder what else is going on behind that child’s innocent smile.

Recipes for Fall Feasts

sharing the wealth

In my recent post about our upcoming Oktoberfest, Tiffany asks:

“Would you be willing to share what is on your menu for your Oktoberfest? It sounds like it would be a fun way to celebrate fall!”

It sure is and I sure will. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional gathering of friends and family. We carve pumpkins, play horseshoes, drink beer, and give the kids lots of cotton candy and other treats.

Dan’s... READ MORE

Partied Out

Costume party was fun

As promised, here is a shot of me and my man heading out to last week’s costume party.

I was sad because when I went back to find the extra-tall ‘fro wig, they were gone. So we settled on this mini-fro that still looked pretty good. I went as a Senora, and Paul was a basketball player from the 1970s. Of course, a few people thought he was dressed up as Richard Simmons so next time we might want to, ahem, think through the costume a bit more.

Either way, the evening was a blast, and I highly recommend you planning a costume party for your next big soiree.

Simple Celebrating

Less really can be more

Tonight we celebrated our youngest boy’s birthday. “Baby” Henry turned two, and to mark the occasion we invited our family and Henry’s godparents over for cake and ice-cream.

I struggled (briefly) with a feeling that this was not enough—that having people over for a one-hour party was not nearly as good as a two-hour game-laden dinner-included extravaganza. But the thing was, we didn’t have time... READ MORE

New Year’s Eve…FAMILY STYLE

As a kid, I always thought that my parents let us stay up until midnight to celebrate the New Year.

But then came the year that my all-knowing older sister spilled the beans. “It’s not really midnight,” she told me. “Dad just changes the clock.”

Could it be true? It was. And it still is.

Each year, aunts and uncles, cousins and grandchildren in my family gather for a New Year’s Eve celebration.... READ MORE

Congratulations, First Communicants!

Share your 1st communion pictures

Is there anything happier than seeing Jesus come to your child for the first time?

Our little Joseph, seen here with our pastor, Fr. James Stack, made his 1st communion Saturday, together with his classmates from St. Jerome School & CCD.

At the end of this post I’ll put in a “Mr. Linky” so you can share pictures from your family celebrations as well. We’d love to see them and share your joy.

Party Ready

Here’s a look at what I have been finding all over the house the past two days: handmade confetti.

What’s that? You didn’t know there was such a thing as handmade confetti?

Well then, you don’t know Gabby. She has been making it by the cupful in preparation for her older brother’s birthday party this weekend.

I have been finding it on the table, on the floor, in the beds, and in the sink.

It’s maddening, and yet I find it so hard to get mad.

Twice Blessed

Double baptism brings double blessings

Occasion: A “double baptism” for two of our children’s babies — girls born one week apart: Adelaide Louise Flavin and Camille Barry Thompson.

Party Planner: Cathy Thompson

Place: Our home in Louisiana

Guests: “All four grandparents for each baby were present, along with three great-grandmothers and two great-grandfathers. Our 11 children were in town, plus two of their spouses, and our four grandchildren.... READ MORE
