Oh Downton Abbey!

how I love thee

Was anyone else counting down the days to the premiere of Downton Abbey, Season 2 this past Sunday? What is it that makes this show so irresistible?

Last year, we stumbled across the weekly drama on PBS one evening, and I was hooked. I had been seeing little comments here and there about the show, but never paid much attention. Then I watched five minutes and I am now a devoted fan. Oh Lord Grantham,... READ MORE

Liked It Emm-ensely

what did you think of the new Emma?

Did you watch the new BBC production of Emma on PBS the past two weeks?

It irritated me at first. The slightly more contemporary dialogue and manners put me off.

Here’s a famous scene which I think is just beautifully done, however. It takes place just after Emma has thanked Mr. Knightley for his gallantry in rescuing her friend Harriet from an embarrassing snub by dancing with her.

Little Dorrit

BBC's production concludes tonight

I can’t believe I’m plugging television shows two weeks in a row, but my family has really enjoyed Little Dorrit, starring Amy Foy and Matthew Macfadyen.

The series concludes tonight on PBS stations, but you can watch it online in its entirety here until next Sunday.

Little Dorrit is Dickens’ satire on the life of the aristocracy, with an undercurrent theme for our time: debt and financial ruin.

It’s third in a series of four Charles Dickens works being shown by Masterpiece Classic this season. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed all three and are looking forward to The Old Curiosity Shop next Sunday.

Recognize this rascal, the villain Rigaud?

It’s Andy Serkis, perhaps better known to you as “Gollum.” Amazing how hair and clothes change a fellow, isn’t it?
