How Shall We Remember?

what's an appropriate memorial for 9/11?

A few weeks ago I visited Ground Zero in New York for the first time.

The last time I’d been there was late August, 2001.

The Twin Towers cast shadows over the photos of my kids playing in the park abutting my aunt’s apartment complex.

Three weeks later, they were gone, and we were in mortal anxiety for my aunt’s life.

I vividly recall hearing flight 77 crash into the Pentagon while I was on the... READ MORE

Open Your Day, Insert Prayer

A 3-minute retreat might be just what you need

Lisa’s post yesterday about finding the perfect prayer time reminded me of a nifty little resource I like to use when life is busy and I find myself staring at a computer screen for way too long:

3-Minute Retreats from Loyola Press.

These mini retreats are an organized way to take a break from work and re-focus yourself with Scripture and prayer. You control how quickly you move through the brief... READ MORE

Deep Breath

tomorrow is another day

Somedays are so much better than others. Today was a good day, so I can talk about the tough days with a sense of calm and a healthy grasp of scope and perspective.

Two days ago, however, that would not have been the case.

It was just a really tough day, for a variety of reasons, and at the end of the day I had one thought: tomorrow will not be like this.

A simple decision, perhaps totally unrealistic,... READ MORE

My Clothesline Brings Me Closer to God

Confessions of a laundry geek

I am not much enamored with laundry. I would gratefully accept the help of a laundry fairy if there really were such a thing. (There isn’t, right? Don’t hold out on me here, moms.)

In a family of ten, though, laundry is an everyday, ongoing process of washing drying, folding, and putting away.

One of the best things I ever did for myself was to stop trying to get the laundry “done.” It never will... READ MORE

Follow The Pope In The Holy Land

The Pope in the Holy Land

Don’t forget to follow Pope Benedict’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land this week!  EWTN will carry all four open air masses and other events.

For full coverage and commentary, check out the Pope Benedict in Israel blog.

He is in Jordan right now and will travel to Israel on Monday.

I loved his answer to a question a reporter asked him about if he can contribute to peace in the Middle East. He immediately... READ MORE

The Courage of Benedict XVI

not bad for an 82-yr-old man!

The Curt Jester’s photoshop of the popemobile Benedict XVI will require in the Holy Land makes a serious point.

The Israeli government is nervous about the Pope’s physical safety during his trip to the Holy Land next week.

British blogger Damien Thompson fears the diplomatic and media landmines laid for him.

I don’t think it’s as bad as all that. Not on the safety front, not on the diplomatic front.... READ MORE

A Month of Food

a whole entire month

Last week, I briefly discussed how the stars came into focus and Jupiter aligned with Mars and lo and behold I made a menu, a very large menu that involved more than planning food for three meals.

It was probably more a matter of grace and someone (my mother?) praying for me. Whatever it was, I have been amazed at how much peace and joy have come from this simple act of deciding in advance what my... READ MORE

So Sad

Praying for Amy

I am so sad and shocked to hear of the death of Michael Dubruiel.

I met Michael and Amy this summer at the New Media Celebration, and they were so generous and kind. It was a great day of hanging out, asking them a million questions and getting a million answers. They are that wonderful.

Prayers for Amy and the children, for peace and comfort and a sense of God’s presence in the midst of this dark time.

Contentment Mine

accepting the season

With the frigid weather in recent days and a few head colds going through the house, we’ve been staying home more than usual.

I make the obligatory runs to basketball practices and games, but trips to the store, the library, and visiting friends have been kept to a minimum.

This makes life both harder and easier. Harder, of course, because we can go a little stir crazy in the house, day after day.... READ MORE

Finding Peace

How do you inspire peace in your home?

In recent days, I’ve been reading Mitten Strings for God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry by Katrina Kenison, a seriously beautiful and inspiring book for mothers of all kinds.

So much of what Kenison, a mother of two boys, shares resonates with me. She has a true mother’s heart and she writes of the kinds of joys, struggles, and longings that are in every mother’s heart.

The chapter titles alone... READ MORE
