O, For A Muse Of Fire!

Happy Pentecost!

“The gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is the realization of the prayer and the promise of Jesus Christ: ‘I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!’ “

“The fire of the Holy Spirit is different from the fire of “war and bombs,” from the fires “lit by the dictators of every age.”  It “brings out the best and most genuine in mankind ... our call to truth and love. ”
—from Benedict XVI’s homily for Pentecost

Shower Of Roses

One of the coolest Roman Catholic (Roman in the geographical sense) traditions is the shower of roses from the oculus of the Pantheon at Pentecost. The bright petals are meant to recall the tongues of fire. I’ve only seen it in stills, but here it is in video.

I’m away on Ignatian Spiritual Exercises this week (this and other posts from me have been pre-loaded to run in my absence), but I thought this post on the Holy Spirit would be a good opportunity to tell you I will pray for all our readers and their intentions in front of the blessed sacrament this week.

Pray for me to be open to the Holy Spirit and for my long-suffering and generous family to survive intact, okay?

Come Holy Spirit

How was the Novena?

A belated Happy Feast of Pentecost!

For the nine days before Pentecost, our family observed the Novena to the Holy Spirit (which Sr. Patricia posted each day here). It was a wonderful experience, and while some of our prayer intentions were more long-term petitions, I am confident our Novena was a “success” simply in the beautiful way it brought our family together each evening.

I’m curious to know how many readers did the Novena, and what fruit you saw (if you’d like to share). Someone emailed to say she had prayed for Henry one day of the Novena. That really blessed me; I was humbled to think of a family offering those same prayers we said that day—with my little infirm in mind. Thank you, dear reader!

Receive the Holy Spirit

from today's Gospel

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
—John 20:21-22

Novena for the Feast of Pentecost - Day 5

Today is the Fifth day of the Novena for Pentecost

I’m trying to think of a specific time when the Holy Spirit spoke to me. One of those big knock you off your horse moments but I can’t say as any come to mind. I do get lots of little nudges though.

I am learning more and more to trust the little nudges and to act upon them immediately. One of the way the Holy Spirit helps me a lot is in planning... READ MORE

Novena for the Feast of Pentecost - Day 4

4th Day of Pentecost Novena

Here is the Novena for the Fourth Day.

There is something beautiful about preparing for Pentecost with a Novena. It sort of builds up the expectation. Which is maybe good.. and maybe not so good… because ..

For a lot of years I would find myself disappointed when Pentecost came and went and I did not have anything really exciting happen. The roof stayed on the monastery. No flames showed up on anyone’s... READ MORE
