The Weird and the Wild

Ferrets! We have ferrets!

When my oldest son was visiting at Easter, he and one of my daughters shared some fond memories of a pet ferret we once had (whose untimely demise I did not mourn), and unbeknownst to me, offered to pay for another one should said daughter ever wish for it.

I’m not entirely sure how this happened — the kids must have drugged me — but within a week there was not one but two ferrets in our home.

Well,... READ MORE

Wonderdog!

This dog is amazing

In my dreams, I have a dog that does amazing tricks and is kind and obedient and eager to please. Paul and I have had three dogs in our family history, and each situation has ended badly. None was the dream dog I hoped for.

Do you have an awesome dog? You should teach it this cool trick.

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Arwen, Sarah and I chat about the newest members of the Reinhard clan: her new pet chickens! This launches a conversation about family pets. Are you a pet family or a non-animal zone? What kinds of things do you think moms and dads should consider when deciding whether or not to take the pet plunge?

This week’s Faith & Family... READ MORE

Dog Days

Will Santa be bringing you a new four-legged friend?

My brother’s family just got a dog.

We met her this weekend, and she’s absolutely adorable — a Gordon Setter with the sweetest face around. So soft, so playful. But now the pressure’s on again with my crew. The conversations have been reignited, and they all begin with some version of the following simple question: “How come we can’t get a dog?”

The usual arguments — “Kids, you know that very quickly... READ MORE

Meals On Wheels

Matthew Craig/Wall Street Journal

Just kidding on the headline.

I couldn’t resist: the story about carts to help lame animals comes accompanied with pictures of a lamb, a chicken and a pig named “Bacon” on wheels.

In fact all the animals in question are beloved, and here’s a cute story about that—and about the rival businesses competing to make life better for man’s best friends.

On the Feast of Francis

When Fr. Matt announced at the end of Mass yesterday morning that, in honor of the Feast of St. Francis, there would be a blessing of the pets at noon, we Beans did some quick calculations in our heads.

Living 30 minutes from our church, it would require a bit of rushing, but we decided that yes, we could do it.

We could, in fact, hurry home, pick up the dog, grab a couple of our favorite chickens... READ MORE

Too Cute

the sweetest and the best

Do you have a pet? If you are thinking about getting one, these are the pictures to look at. Or not. If you’re on the fence about it, these puppies might sway you in the wrong direction.

We got a puppy a few years ago. After several weeks of taking the puppy outside to pee and poop, I realized that what I really wanted was a tiny little creature who would eventually learn to do this on his own. Nine... READ MORE

Last Day of School

...and we are all just delighted

How do we feel about school being out for summer? I think this dog captures the mood admirably.
