On Becoming a Pilgrim

The prayer adventure of a lifetime...

Hi friends, just a few quick words from the Holy Land where I am having the time of my life. Our internet connection here in Jerusalem is sketchy at best—to use my iPad I must do some gymnastics that are inconvenient at best… so I will keep this short and share the bulk of my stories over the next few weeks when I return home to the land of abundant and free wifi.

Although I have been able share so... READ MORE

Off to Israel

A journey to the Holy Land

On Wednesday of this week, I’ll be able to cross a lifelong dream off of my “some day” list as I depart on a nine-day trip to Israel. I’ll be in the company of nine other Catholic writers as part of a trip arranged by the Catholic Press Association in conjunction with the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.

Our nine-day adventure will take us to many of the highlights of Israel—mentally, as I write this... READ MORE

Fatima Comes to Boston

Just in time for the month of the Rosary

Since October is the month of the Rosary, and October 13th is the anniversary of what I like to call The Day God proved His Existence to the World (aka the miracle of the sun), I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about my husband’s job.

Bill is the escort of the National Pilgrim Virgin of Our Lady of Fatima. This statue was given to the World Apostolate of Fatima (formerly known as the... READ MORE

For the Youth of the World

Madrid is calling ... any takers?

Am I the only one, or does this little montage have your heart bursting with joy for our Church?

Grassroots Films has really captured the essence of World Youth Day. Young people, given the chance, will be on fire for our beautiful faith. The “future of our Church” … begins in the present of our Church.

Anyone heading to Spain with a group this summer?  I know it’s an exhausting pilgrimage, but after watching this short film, I think it might be wise to hide my credit cards and checkbook … or by day’s end I may find myself the proud owner of plane tickets to Madrid!

Silence In Hyde Park

Not to belabor the point, but Pope Benedict XVI really won the people of the United Kingdom over.

Here’s an incredible story about that.

Read it if you need some cheering up.

I bring this up again, though, because it highlights one of the most astonishing moments of the trip, more powerful, perhaps, than his many beautiful and pitch-perfect addresses.

That was the moment of exposition of the Blessed... READ MORE

Mass Blessings

Have you attended Mass in another cultural setting recently?

This weekend, the boys and I had the pleasure of attending the 10:15 am Chinese Mass at the lovely Ss. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco.  The church sits beautifully on Washington Square, its spires visible from many parts of the city.  In our suburban home, we typically drive to and from Mass, so even being able to walk to Mass was a special treat.

But the most amazing blessing of all was worshiping... READ MORE

Return of the Shroud

Two days ago the Shroud of Turin went on display for the first time in 8 years.

Pilgrims will be able to visit and see it for the next 6 weeks.

One very famous pilgrim—the Pope—will travel to see the shroud and celebrate mass in the city center on May 2.

Exposition of the shroud, which many Christians believe (though we are not in faith obligated to) to be the burial cloth of Jesus, is being accompanied... READ MORE

Miniature Miracles

Cullman, Alabama abbey is well worth a visit!

This week, I have been sharing with you some of my favorite memories from the “pilgrimage” I took with my parents last weekend.  The impetus for the trip was my desire to visit the world famous “Ave Maria Grotto” in Cullman, Alabama.  I’ve heard about the grotto for years and had hoped to someday visit this four acre array of miniature shrines, churches, buildings and landmarks from around the world. ... Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament

An amazing opportunity to spend time in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

In yesterday’s installment of my travelogue, I shared with you that our pilgrimage plans went slightly askew due to a flat tire.  The result was that we lost a day of our touring time, so things had to be somewhat abbreviated.  This also meant that we arrived rather late to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, home of Mother Angelica and her Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration.

As you approach... READ MORE
