Pope2008.com vs. Tom
Posted by Tom and April Hoopes in Editor's Note on Thursday, May 01, 2008
April: My husband's worst nightmare is coming true. The Pope is coming to the United States. That means that the children have a chance to prove him wrong.
It's not a good chance, mind you, since we haven't found tickets to see the Pope so far, but it's a chance.
You see, Tom's excuse to the kids, when he denies them something, is often, "The Pope doesn't do that, so why should you?" If any of the... READ MORE
The Pope Gets It
Darkness and light complement each other. Even a grape, in order to ripen, does not only need the sun but also the rain, not only the day but also the night.

Each summer the Holy Father meets with diocesan priests in the region where he vacations, and the Vatican publishes the Q&A sessions that result. In anticipation of this summer’s edition, here’s an excerpt from 2006, in which the Holy Father speaks of how to revive marriage as an institution. His full answer is marvelous, but I thought you’d appreciate this especially. The Pope describes an encounter... READ MORE
The Pope and Family Size

Incidentally, in that same answer about marriage discussed below, I had to laugh at the Holy Father’s description of one couple he met:
“One family was virtually a ‘parish’, it had so many children!”
Not everyone who’s astonished at your family size is disapproving.
Benedict’s Wit

With Mr. T. at the wheel for a weekend road trip, I took advantage of the opportunity to read Brennan Pursell’s Benedict of Bavaria. Among its many delights are the revelations that the young Joseph Ratzinger had a bit of a mouth on him where teachers were concerned (mothers of pre-teens, take heart!); that after the war his seminary was so damaged he had to climb into his dorm via ladder through... Healing Our Scarred Environment

May I beg you to read the Holy Father’s message to young people delivered yesterday in Sydney? It’s rich beyond my word count here, but I can’t resist a summary at least. First, since environmental matters are a foremost concern in the vulnerable island nations of the Pacific, the Holy Father’s controlling image is the beauty of creation. Here’s how he describes his journey to WYDSYD as it’s being... READ MORE

I have to praise my magazine colleague Tim Drake for his wonderful coverage of World Youth Day in Sydney.(No, that’s not him in the picture --although he did get an interview.) From the silly (Aussie slang and pilgrim snacks) to the sublime, Tim captured the local color and made a far-away event seem more real. As an instance of the sublime, I recommend his astonishing interview with the actors who... READ MORE

We Remember

On the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, let us recall the words Pope Benedict prayed when he visited Ground Zero this past spring:
O God of love, compassion, and healing,
look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions,
who gather today at this site,
the scene of incredible violence and pain.
We ask you in your goodness
to give eternal light and peace... READ MORE

From today’s Zenit:
VATICAN CITY, OCT. 14, 2008 (Zenit.org).- One of the auditors at the world Synod of Bishops has suggested that Benedict XVI opens a blog to explain the word of God in an attractive way.
The proposal was made today by Agnes Lam, president of the Catholic Biblical Association of Hong Kong.
Among her suggestions to promote the word of God so that the faithful can come to know... READ MORE
