Say A Little Prayer
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Just me on Wednesday, February 08, 2012
My home state of Maryland is one of several where same-sex marriage is being debated in the legislature.
Call it “no good deed goes unpunished,” but a column I wrote arguing that the debate over marriage is another front in the battle over religious liberty garnered the attention of the Maryland Catholic Conference.
I’ll be one of those testifying in defense of marriage before committees of the Maryland House of Delegates this Friday.
“Committees,” plural, because the process is being manipulated.
A similar measure was defeated in the judiciary committee last year, so this year the bill is being brought before a double committee in an effort to get it voted out for a floor vote.
The legislators are not very kind to marriage defenders, and I will admit I am anxious. (Though, since I’m not the head of any group, I’m not all that likely to draw fire.)
Say a little prayer, therefore, will you—for me and for all the witnesses?
May we be calm and our words gentle, but may they travel like arrows to the hearts of our delegates.
It would be nice if Maryland, founded as a refuge of liberty for Catholics, would refrain from turning the law into a cudgel to beat us all down.
Prayers for Bishop Steinbock
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Friday, December 03, 2010
The bishop of Fresno, John Steinbock, is in critical condition, battling lung cancer.
His essay on Christians and cancer, written to his diocese, is here, and includes this:
“I know people are praying for me. When they tell me this I often simply thank them. For those who are closer and who would understand, I tell them to pray, not that God take away the cancer, but that he gives me the grace to witness all the more to his love and goodness in my life because of the cancer and the suffering He sends me. It’s all part of God’s plan, to be like him, to bear our cross with Jesus, to witness His love, to get to heaven, to be with Him for all eternity.”
Breakthrough!

Are you following the story of the trapped Chilean miners?
After initial reports, it dropped of my radar for awhile.
Now I find myself praying for them continuously and waiting with mounting excitement for the report that they are free.
Video here is of workers breaking through at last to the tunnel where the men are trapped. The sense of jubilation, dedication and brotherhood is so heartening and beautiful.
The first extractions should come tomorrow.
Prayers For Ralph McInerny
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Just me on Sunday, January 10, 2010
Of your kindness, would you pray for Ralph McInerny?
The long-time Notre Dame philosophy professor and prolific novelist is apparently quite ill.
His actual condition is unclear.
This post requesting prayers contains conflicting reports in comments.
But God will know best how to direct our prayers for this great teacher and good man.
Shower Of Roses

One of the coolest Roman Catholic (Roman in the geographical sense) traditions is the shower of roses from the oculus of the Pantheon at Pentecost. The bright petals are meant to recall the tongues of fire. I’ve only seen it in stills, but here it is in video.
I’m away on Ignatian Spiritual Exercises this week (this and other posts from me have been pre-loaded to run in my absence), but I thought this post on the Holy Spirit would be a good opportunity to tell you I will pray for all our readers and their intentions in front of the blessed sacrament this week.
Pray for me to be open to the Holy Spirit and for my long-suffering and generous family to survive intact, okay?
Prayers Please for Henry ... and His Mom
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Sunday, May 10, 2009
Rachel called me from the hospitable a short while ago to let me know that 22-month-old Henry fell while at a Mother’s Day picnic and broke his femur.
He’ll be having surgery in the morning and getting what sounds like a super-restrictive cast put on. He’ll spend the next few days in the hospital.
Please pray for this active little guy’s speedy recovery and for his mother’s peace of mind.
